I bought an external USB drive thinking that I could boot OSX from it (someone said they could do this), but now that I know I cant, I don't know what to do with it. Can I still install applications to it? Is there an adapter I could get to make it firewire? I really feel that I could put some use to this thingbut I dont know what.

You could replace the bridge board, but that's more trouble than it's worth. Sell the USB and get a FireWire, or just save the USB drive for file backups and get the FireWire for booting.
