I have an HP deskjet 5550 which is two years old and we love it or shall I say- loved it. It has been working well untill recently when (I am assuming this part) the sensor for the ink cartridges don't seem to be working. First it kept wanting to tell me I was out of ink- but when I created a test page the print (b&w and Color) were still clear. At that point I was still able to print, now it tells me that it doesn't recognize the the black ink cartridge at all and completely refused to print. I only use HP products for the printer so the message doesn't make any sense. I even went as far as putting a completely new cartridge in there- worked once than didn't again.

What am I to do- I have no warranty on it so I can't ask HP directly.

Do you think it's worth trying to get it fixed or should I just buy a new one.

I guess I should have gotten an extended warranty on the thing. But I guess at the time, for a $130 printer it didn't make sense... But now I wish I had.

PS- Yes I did down load all the updates. My system is OS 10.4.1. I have a year old iBook.

I have a 5150 that work gave me, and it's pretty good for day to day printing, but not photos.

Wet a toothbrush or a Q-tip with some alcohol and use it to clean off the electrical contacts to your ink cartridge. Brush the electrical contacts in your printer, not the corresponding contacts on your ink cartridge.
