hi

how long do the apple wireless keyboard and mouse last before needing a battery change?

do they power off/sleep automatically or do you need to shut them off yourself?

are the batteries rechargable? do they even come with batteries?

recommended?

benefits?

hardships?

and thanks!

With good disposables the AWM lasts about 2-3 weeks, less with rechargables. We're talking heavy use here. It does sleep on its own (and you can turn it off too) so with lighter use you can get significantly more. It comes with a pair of AA disposables. Good silver and blue bunny ones, at least when I got mine.

The AWK takes 4 AAs and can go as long as 2 months with heavy use, much more without.

Benefits:
No wires

Hardships:
This isn't really too much of a hardship, but the batteries change the way the mouse is weighted (compared to the Apple Pro Mouse), this takes a bit to get used to.

The low battery warning goes off way too early.

The AWK has no USB ports.

I'd definitely recommend the AWM. The AWK only if you're really into the "clean" look (which I am, and I like).

AWM and AWK? i didn't know that apple had two different wireless keyboard. i just knew you chose a wireless keyboard and mouse option like at the online store, etc.

unless you're not talking about Apple keyboards.

also -- what are you considering as "heavy use"

thanks for the quick response.

AWM: Apple Wireless Mouse
AWK: Apple Wireless Keyboard

Sorry for the confusion about that.

I'm thinking of heavy use as a full computer oriented workday.

My wireless mouse gets moderate use every single day and I find I need to replace the batteries every month or so. My Wireless Keyboard tends to last several months, as I use it much less. I also rarely ever turn these devices off.

The low battery warning (Bluetooth menu status icon) is annoying as hell, as it does go off WAY too early and it constantly flashes in the top menu bar, until you replace the device with new batteries. You can not get rid of this warning either. Other than this distraction I have been very satisfied with my AWK & AWM. No wires is definitely the way to go!
