I'm currently using a Triumph Eagle enclosure from PCMicroStore (http://www.pcmicrostore.com/PartDeta...?q=p:10502248), but I've noticed a few strange things (some of which I've mentioned in other posts). First of all, the LED is far too bright, and I need to leave the HD off at night (which is a problem for backing up). Second of all, when I take the HD tray out of the enclosure, there are a bunch of metallic blobs on the circuitboard. Is this lead solder? If so, isn't it a little weird for a company to have to solder its products in the original manufacturing process? Solder is great for repair, but to start out with? Finally, I can't find any reference to the company anywhere on the net.

I'm starting to feel really iffy about this enclosure, even though it's gorgeous. I like products I can trust.

If anyone has any input, that'd be great.

P.S. I have a 80GB Maxtor HD, and I keep hearing that Maxtor is unreliable. I'm starting to think that my $90 was a complete rip-off, especially since I now realize that I don't even need USB 2.0 at all.

The company's web site can be found at:

www.triumphtech.com

You're right, their enclosures are gorgeous. I own a couple of Triumph enclosures myself. The 3.5" Venus firewire and the 5.25" Titan USB 2/Firewire enclosure for my external DVD burner. I've owned mine for over a year now and haven't had any problems yet. (knocks on wood).

If the LED is too bright for you, try disconnecting it's power wire from the circuit board.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

I'm a bit confused... How is the LED being too bright and your needing to have the HD off at night a problem? Night light bothering you? :???:

I got myself a Vantec NexStar 2 a while back when it was on sale. It houses a Seagate 120GB 7200-rpm HDD. Its neither flashy nor great, but it does the job. It doesn't come with an Oxford 911 chipset (which is a bummer), instead it has the, but I can still boot off of it.

Recently, I got myself Seagate's 300GB External Firewire/USB drive ($40 rebate in Outpost). Its not as compact as the enclosures you can get, but it looks nice enough. Nice thing is that the drive comes with 8MB of cache.

Well, if it's on, it lights up the entire room. That definetely bothers me. If it's off, I can't do backups while I'm asleep. That definetely bothers me.

Stogieman, do your enclosures look soldered together?

See if you can open up the enclosure and pull out the wire going to the LED for the time being.
