i have 1000s of songs I want to transfer from my ibook to an external usb 2.0 drive. I only want to access the music when the drive is connected through usb, I don't want any music stored on the ibook. What is the easiest way to do this without losing all the info for the songs. I tried this once and lost everything Thanks in advance.

did you try taking the music folder from your HD and copying it onto your external drive?

You have to point iTunes to the music. Try this thread.

Yes, Copy the files.
Then you need to go into preferences>Advanced click Change.
Navigate to the new folder and click Choose.
Note: You then need to reauthorize one of the new files in the new locatoin. This will allow you to use all the new files on the new HD. Then when it is working correctly you can delete the old files from the ibook.
Good Luck.
