DVI cables, and all video cables in general, have those little knobs that you need to spin in order to plug them in. Personally, I think that's a pain in the ass to do every time I bring my laptop back to my room. I want to bring my external monitor to school, but I would want things to be as quick as possible, for a reasonable price. Is there any type of adapter I could buy that would let me plug it in without using those screws? Perhaps a DVI to USB adapter that would let me plug it into my USB hub? I know of one solution: I could pay $150 for a laptop dock, where I would plug the DVI cable into the VGA port with an adapter, and plug the dock into my laptop via USB. That's way too expensive, though.

Any ideas?

Wow! I don't need to screw it in! In any case, USB would be better. Those docks seem to sell real cheap on eBay. Maybe I'll go that route.

yeah, the screws don't actually do/transmit anything. they just hold the plug in. if it's not in danger of being knocked or pulled out, the screws aren't necessary.

USB is in no way capable of carrying a DVI signal. DVI carries orders of magnitude more data than USB can do.

Just don't screw the screws. Plug it in and leave it, as MaxPower2k3 said.
