How do I access a Mac OS 10.2 formatted external hard drive from my Windows XP laptop? I have to connect it through the USB port, my laptop recognizes it as a mass storage device, but it doesn't map a drive for it.

There are several programs to do this, such as MacOpener from DataViz.

Generally, if you need your external drive to be cross platform, you should format it for Windows (FAT32).

I actually disagree. There are some significant issues with FAT32 with today's (large) drives. It is VERY wasteful to use FAT32 on a 160 GB drive... a 1 KB text file will take up like 512 KB of disk.

If you regularly share data, I'd recommend something like MediaFour's MacDrive:

I've used it for a few years... it is excellent. Costs like $50 but definitely worth it to me, compared to the alternatives. FAT32 is a way to do it for free, but you sorta get the worst of both worlds, if it's a large drive. If it's a 20 GB drive, sure.

Mostly, my iMac died, and I have some backup files on my firewire/USB 2.0 external hard drive. I have a WinXP laptop with a 1.1 USB, and I am hoping to save some of my data.

Thank-you for the replies.

(Reference the iMac forum for my problem.)
