Hi,

I know the TV I have aceepts S-video input, and my powerbook has s-video output, so my question is, will the video be the same quailty as if I bought a normal DVD player for the TV? My tv is a 27in tv. I haven't tried myself yet, because I don't have s-video cables and I am moving soon, so I didn't want to unpack the TV.

Thanks!

I think the output from a PB is fine, but I personally would not like to use it as a permanent solution when a DVD player is only $20. I am willing to spend that much to avoid packing and unpacking my audio/video cables on a regular basis.

It does work, and it's what I did for a long time. But a standalone DVD player is much less hassle, responds more quickly, has a remote control, and is much less sensitive to scratches and dirt on discs. (Computer DVD-ROM drives are designed to be super-picky about data integrity.) Also, a standalone DVD player will pass on closed-captioning info to the TV; the computer can render them itself, but the TV's text will be crisper.

So yeah, for $20-50, it's just not worth using the computer.
