I recently switched from a PC to a 20" G5 iMac. I have noticed that file transfers using the USB hub built into the Apple keyboard are really slow. Is this hub only 1.1 instead of 2.0?

as far as i know the keyboard is USB 1 - it doesn't actually say either way on Apple's site.

try plugging the device you're transferring from into the back of the iMac and see if that improves the speed

Nivag;

Yes, the back ports are much faster. It just really surprises me that the keyboard would be 1.1... Kinda disappoints me.

It is my understanding that it has to do with the amount of available power being carried back through the keyboard from the computer. Well before USB 2.0 even existed on Macs, there was a distinction made between "powered" and "unpowered" USB 1.1 ports, whereby users were warned not to hook up things like floppy drives to the keyboard ports unless those devices had an AC adapter to get power on their own. There just wasn't enough power to drive those devices entirely from the USB port. This is also why an iPod Shuffle cannot be charged from the keyboard ports, even though it will still transfer files back and forth just fine. Although I don't know for sure, I'm assuming that there is no such thing as an "unpowered" USB 2.0 port, since that protocol probably requires more power than USB 1.1 ever called for. Thus, unless Apple were to change the way that the keyboard is connected to the computer, the UBS ports on the keyboard can only ever be unpowered 1.1 ports.

It also has to do with bandwidth. The ports on the keyboards were only designed for low power/low bandwidth devices like mice and flash drives. Even as far back as the B&W G3's, the ports on the back of the machine always had higher power & higher bandwidth available than the KB ports did....

Beige G3s didn't have USB. It had ADB ports, which had no differences between ports on the computer or the keyboard (they are all wired together electrically).
