I used to use an MX700 and I just got a MX1000. Apparently Logitech does not include software for Macs with the MX1000, only Windows (which is weird since my MX700 had Logitech Control Center software). So I removed all the Logitech stuff I believe (it doesn't show up in Activity Monitor anymore) and switch to usboverdrive.
Anyway, I installed USB Over Drive and I want to be able to edit the settings and set up all my buttons. But the side buttons don't seem to work. I also noticed that clicking the down arrow under the scroll wheel opens the application switcher.
This is kind of disappointing since I got the MX1000 for all the buttons it has, and I can't even use them. Can anyone help? Does the USBOverdrive not work well with the MX1000 or perhaps some logitech stuff is still on my mac stopping it from working?

The MX1000 works fine with USB Overdrive. Are you trying to edit the Global settings? I believe the side buttonsare 4, 5, and 6. What are you trying to assign to those buttons?

Yes, just global settings. I want the side buttons to be back/forward (for controlling Safari, Finder, iTunes Music Store, etc).
Nothing I do seems to work at all. I am wondering if there is still some Logitech driver stuff on my hard drive, maybe I need to reformat or something.

I don't think the Back and Forward options in the dropdown will work for all apps. You'll probably need to make a custom profile for each app which doesn't work with the Back and Forward option and assign the keyboard equivalent to forward and back (may vary from app to app) to the buttons you want. I just tested Firefox and Safari. Both seem to work with Back and Forward.

I avoided any 3rd party software/drivers whatsoever and mapped the side buttons to expose features. Works great for me, but I just slap the delete key real quick when I need to back up a page. YMMV.

Looks like iTunes is the odd man out. Besides Firefox and Safari, I also tested out Finder and iTMS. Finder works fine with Forward and Back. iTMS doesn't even have keyboard equivalents to each command.

Well I installed the Logitech Control Center software that was on their site, and got the buttons working mostly how I wanted them.
I would rather use USBOverdrive though, since it uses a lot less RAM (like 3mb compared to logitech's 17mb ram) and it also has a lot more options (logitechs own software won't even let me map all of the buttons to their mouse!), but I guess I am stuck with the logitech stuff for now, since at least that works.

There must be something with your system them. USB Overdrive works fine with the MX1000. When you previously uninstalled LCC did you use the uninstaller or manually remove the drivers? If there's any remnants of the old mouse drivers from any manufacturer that could affect USBOD functionality. There's a new USBOD release today, 10.4, which just adds Mighty Mouse functionality. Give that a try after uninstalling LCC. LCC is a piece of crap and I really feel sorry for anyone that has to use it.

I did not know there was an uninstaller for LCC. So I just used Spotlight to find the Logitech files, and deleted them. It did not show up in activity monitor anymore, so I thought it would not be running, but I guess it was still conflicting.
I just installed USB Overdrive 10.4 on my iBook, which didn't have LCC on it, and it worked fine. So now I know for sure the Logitech stuff is conflicting. I'll either use the uninstaller or just reformat my Mac since I plan to do that anyway. Thanks for helping me figure this out..
One more thing - is there no way map a button to Application Switcher in USB Overdrive? Or Exposé?

Logitech driver version 150, and USB OD both work fine with it mapping all buttons. USB OD has more capability but you might want to give SteerMouse a try. It has all USB OD features but does them but better IMO. The interface is somewhat similar to MS in that when you click a button visual feedback is given so there is no button guessing. Also, when you hold the tilit wheel left or right you get automatic horizontal scrolling which didn't seem to work for me using USB OD. I had to continueously click manually to scroll.
