"Epsons print beautifully most of the time, but their print heads clog more swiftly and frequently than do HPs or Canons. I have a LOT of experience in this area, both personal and professional. I used to recommend Epson to my tutorial clients and Tucson MUG members, but I now also urge people to buy HP or Canon."

Excellent.

At the Sommerset Mall in Troy, Mi they had a glut of Epson printers and only one Canon. Unfortunately it wasn't the one I wanted.

I'm a full-time photographer and I don't believe that about Epson printers. I've had almost a dozen of them and never had any problem with clogging nozzles but I use them almost every day (I currently have a 4000).

Epson owns the photo printing market.

When I first went to OSX in 2002, I had to get a new printer (the old one -- an Epson -- wasn't OSX compatible). I bought a relatively inexpensive one, a C80, I think it was. Within a couple years, it was spewing black ink out. I called epson. Believe it or not, they actually replaced it, even though it was out of warranty, sending me a C82. Last spring, it ceased to print. Believe it or not, they sent me yet another one, for free, I might add. It's a C86 -- seems pretty cheaply built, to me.

When I was in the market for a photo printer, I bought a Canon Pixma. If the Epson would have died, I would never have purchased another to replace it. I used to love Epsons, but no more. THey use too much ink and I've had too many problems with them. And I've used Epsons for probably 15 years.

1. Well there you go, that's why you've had no clogging. The average home user prints only occasionally -- Epsons like to clog if not used constantly. HP and Canon both handle occasional use with aplomb.

2. Epson does a great job at photos -- but so does Canon. Take a look at an i9900 print sometime...

I am a full time designer and printed every 3 days on one of the 3 epsons I owned. They all clogged all the time. Bought a Canon, not one clog in 2 years and 500 prints.

Canon rocks. Just adding my 2 cents, and that's about it.

Good riddance. I've had a much better time with my HP.

me too. i switch from a epson inkject to an HP and used it about the same amount. Only the HP does not DRY UP after not being used for a couple of weeks.

I'm now an HP inkjet supporter.

Not _every_ update. Just every _second_ update. And it's usually fixable with a slash-and-burn attack using Print Setup Repair.

Meanwhile, the (free! 3rd-party!) GIMP-print drivers never break...

Hey, the laser drivers almost always work, and the high-end inkjets usually work, it's just the low- and mid-range inkjets which go titsup at the sight of a major update. It's not that HP is anti-Mac, it's that they can't write software. A look at the FAQs and the forums on their site, and at the printer forum at Apple's site, shows this quite clearly. (Check out the FAQ for the DJ 6540 for just one example. The installer may decide that your system doesn't meet its minimum requirements even if it really does, and refuse to install the driver... and if you somehow get the driver installed, it may refuse to work! There is a workaround, but duh!)

Exactly, the laserwitter drivers are solid but the inkjet software is responsible for a ton of problems. Just do a search on these boards and the number or problems that come up are astounding.

I've had good luck with Epson printers, but the main reason I expect my next printer to be Epson is that I want to start printing directly onto CDs/DVDs. I think Epson is the only company offering this capability in lower-priced models.

Yep, thanks to Epson's stupid patent on CD printing. Outside the US, Canon's printers also offer direct CD printing...

That is one of those patents that should never have been granted.
