I bought a new hard drive which connects to my PB via Firewire 400. However, it is currently unusable because my Firewire bus keeps resetting whenever it's plugged in, even if it's not mounted. Since this is constantly interrupting the flow of data it's impossible to reliably write anything to the drive.

There is nothing wrong with the port itself, as both my iPod and a further HD work fine. Using other Firewire cables makes no difference.

Does anyone know, before I try and send the thing back, what might be causing these bus resets and if there is an easy fix?

I would send it back. By the way, here is a good article on firewire port failures. I would also recommend the Firewire Reader at Macintouch.
