So I just got my new Sony Ericsson K750i from www.myworldphone.com who (as an unpaid endorsement) also seem to have the LOWEST prices on brand new unlocked mobile phones. But I digress. There are so many reasons why I love my new phone, let me count thy ways:
- It syncs with iTunes (kinda). When you plug the K750i into the Mac using the supplied USB cable, it mounts in the Finder. You just drag the songs you want out of iTunes and onto that little mounted drive that appeared. When you unplug the K750i, it has a really good media player that let's you play the music, supports ID3 tags, and has a pretty decent speaker. Your Mp3s can then be used for ring tones too if you wanted. For instance, my gay friend got a nice "It's raining men" ringtone and my ex-girlfriend just got Kanye West's Gold Digger for a ringtone.
- It syncs with iPhoto (For real). When you plug the K750i into the Mac it will automatically launch iPhoto every time (I turned that off because it got real old real fast, use the Image Capture Preferences). There it operates just like any other camera you've had. Imports, deletes, etc.
- The picture quality is really good. This next photo was taken at sunset at a high school football game last night (full quality):
http://homepage.mac.com/idrivex/football.jpg
(picture was too big for inline)
- They've really improved on the UI over the earlier phones (T68i, T610, T616, T630, T637), when sending text messages there are about 2 less screens to choose who you want to send it to and in the screen where you choose your recipients, right under that it has a quicklist of people you have recently texted.
- It has a File Manager, where you can see all of your songs, ring tones, themes, photos, videos, and other documents you have stored on the Sony Memory Card in a very Finder-esque hierarchial layout.
- The phone feels a lot more solid and the thumbstick is probably the easiest I've ever used.
- FM Radio is nice, but my only complaint is if you want to listen and use headphone you have to use their supplied headphones or by a converter for mini-jack. There's a proprietary dock port on the bottom of the phone (much like the iPod) and that's where their headphones connect to.
- Dedicated Music button on the side of the phone. Press it once and you're at your Media Player and listening to music.
- Speaker Phone (FINALLY!)
- Lens Cover and Flash. (and in the dark you can enable the flash to be a flash light and it is blindingly bright)
- Better battery life (Even when taking photos and listening to music) than my T637 had.
- Probably about 10% less signal strength in spotty areas.
- Regular speaker (not the speaker phone speaker, two separate speakers) is much better quality. Things sound much much clearer than the T637 and previous models.
- The screen. OMG this screen is beautiful. Support for animated desktops, it's very bright and very vibrant. Much easier to see in direct sunlight and a much faster screen refresh rate, which is noticeable when you open the lenscap and it automatically goes into "picture taking mode". Much fast screen refresh than the Canon PowerShot S200 I gave it up for.
- Auto focus is awesome.
And that's about it. I have no complains whatsoever about this phone. The only time I will upgrade from this phone is when they release a 3 MP version of this phone OR when the Treo gets a 3 MP camera and wifi and comes down a bit in price.

Oh and I forgot to mention expandability. It has a Sony Pro Duo Memory Stick slot on the side which allows at this time expandability up to 1 GB (2 GB has been released by Sony, but you're hard pressed to find a retailer who has it in stock)

One other thing, when you are setting it up using Bluetooth Setup Assistant, there is this extra check mark that I had never seen before:
The phone has an application in it that will control Keynote, iTunes, and PowerPoint (move ahead slide, back slide) automatically right out of the box and Mac OS X has built in support for it. It also has a second feature that allows you to use it as a mouse of sorts using the thumb stick to move the cursor, and on the screen it maps the numeric keys to things like right click, left click, quit, etc. So you don't need to use a program like SE Clicker anymore for those purposes!

The pictures I spoke of were the screen shot of the bluetooth setup assistant and the picture quality of the camera. If you want pictures of the actual camera click here:

Great Review!
I've been thinking about getting this phone to replace my Sony s710. I do have one question though. Can the phone be used as a "usb drive" meaning can you mount it in the finder , and drag and drop files? I see you said it works for music, but are other file types possible? I'll probably get it anyways but this would be icing on the cake.
Thanks

Absolutely, it mounts in the finder anytime you connect it to the computer and you can drag and drop other files on there. It supports any file. When you go to the File Manager you will see a list of folders:
Pictures
Videos
Sounds
Themes
Web Pages
Games
Other
If you were to send a file over bluetooth or USB called "file.doc", it would show up in this "Other folder", although it wouldn't be viewable. The only files that are viewable on this are .jpg, .thm .mp3 and .mp4 (for videos), in fact, here is the "Demo Movie" that plays when you first turn on the phone, I extracted it and posted it on my site:

You've officially pushed me over the edge into purchasing this phone. It will be great to have the 2mpx camera, and music playback capabilities. I've always liked Sony Ericsson's UI, and integration with iSync is a must. Although I love my present s710, the lack of upgradeable memory beyond 128mb, was starting to annoy me. It has become my primary on-the-go music listening device since my iPod Shuffle was stolen. I think i'll buy the k750i now, then wait for the s710 successor sometime next year.
Thank's Again

No problem. Yeah, when I first turned on the phone, my mouth just dropped. I was overwhelmed with a feeling of "Don't take your eyes off the screen" and "I have to find someone to show this too". Last night as I was uploading that video I went to Apple's website and downloaded the trailer for the Chronicles of Narnia. I converted it to an .Mp4 file and uploaded it to the phone over bluetooth (btw, uses Bluetooth 2.0, with my PowerBook G4, consistantly transfers files between 40-45K/sec). It played wonderfully! And I was able to select that it play it "Horizontally" so I moved my phone 90 degrees in my hand and got to watch it in Landscape Mode, instead of Portrait.

That's awesome. -_- I reeeeeeeaaly want this phone (or perhaps the W800, same thing but with more music stuff, Walkman branded), especially because of that sweet—for a phone!—2 MP camera. It would make taking pictures with my phone WORTH something, not the pixelated crap I get with my Z600. And I love taking pictures.
I could probably justify the cost if it were a quad-band phone, because as is I'd still be forced to use T-Mobile, and I want the option of Cingular available to me (they seem to have better service in my area)...

Gack. Yeah. I've been "almost" buying this phone for weeks (after years of not having a cell at all because I didn't want to wind up turning into a phone nerd yet). Just when I was gonna finally do it, I heard about this September 7th event. Now I'm waiting a teeny bit more on the offchance that either the a) iTunes phone is so awesome that I have to have it (doubtful) or b) Apple comes out with something else that's so cool I have to have it but so expensive I'll have to get a cheap phone.
I'm really not expecting to be impressed by the Apple/Moto collaboration, though.

Is this phone available in U.S. now? If it is, my provider (Cingular) doesn't provide it in my area...
I have a T616 now, and as soon as I saw the K750i I knew that would be my next upgrade... whenever it became available.
iDriveX: you've used the T616/610, right? You've answered all of my other concerns about whether it improved on the shortcomings of the T616, but I really need to know if the signal strength has improved significantly. I really can't stand when I'm talking to someone with 4 bars, and for no (apparent) reason the signal drops to 1 or no bars, and my call gets cut. And this is in a major metropolitan area.

The k750i was never officially released for the North American market and probably won't be, so the carriers won't be providing it. You have to buy it through importers, like the aforementioned myworldphone.com, or perhaps electronics stores in Chinatown, if your city has one. The w800i is available, but only through SonyStyle or the Sony Ericsson web site.
Also, depending on where you are and how much traveling you do, it's probably not a good idea to try and use it with Cingular service. The phone is triband with no 850 MHz, which is what Cingular uses in most of the country. Apparently people are using it in NY/NJ on Cingular because they have a decent no. of 1900 MHz towers there. But if you want to use one of these phones throughout the U.S., you kinda have to go with T-Mobile.
If you don't mind switching carriers, there are apparently retailers (brick-and-mortar and online) who are offering rebates on the phones w/new activation. Poke around the Sony Ericsson forum on HowardForums.com for more details.
good luck.

Same here. I'm also waiting, but I expect that after the announcement I'll end up getting the Sony Ericsson W800i, which is the K750i with different firmware, housing, and accessories (including a stereo headphone adapter).
I may wait until after Apple Expo though since that's only a couple of weeks later, and the W800i should drop a notch more in price by then too.

Yeah, I haven't gotten 'round to pricing the w800i with a contract, but it would be interesting to see how it'd compare to the k750i once the cost of accessories are added in. There seems to be a consensus that I'd want the better headphone adapter and a bigger (ugh) memory stick.
FWIW, I think the headphone thingy that comes with the k750i is actually stereo, but it's got a 2.5mm jack, so you can't just use it with whatever headphones you already have.
Maybe I should just wait 'til you get a phone and go with the model you don't get, Eug. I already have 2 of the same Macs as you; don't wanna be a big ol' Copycat.

I use it with Cingular in my area. I'm not sure how your area is. I live in Southern California and as I previously stated, the reception is interesting. I probably have about 10% less reception than I used to, but unlike the T6xx series of phone, when I only have one bar of reception, the clarity is crystal clear and I haven't had a dropped call yet, unlike my T6xx series which would drop calls randomly.
I can only compare it to those Apple Airport Upgrades we've seen in the past where they readjust the bars/signal strength. I think I am getting the same signal strength, it's just that the bars show it differently. On the T6xx series, if I had one bar the person was cutting in and out, on the K750i, one bar is perfect quality.

You and me both. I think with Apple's focus on music only, I wouldn't be suprised if this phone lacked a camera completely but was priced with other camera phones. I think this phone will be mainly for people that are looking for an iPod/Phone integration not an iPod/Phone/Camera integration.
It'll be nice when the parts are cheap enough for an iPod/Phone/Camera that has a 2.0 GB Flash chip in it for music AND photos and syncs over bluetooth or USB 2.0 in both Applications.

Cingular will never carry the K750i from what I've heard. If they are going to carry a phone it will be the W800i. But the W800i is priced about $200 more than the K750i at this point if you want it unlocked.
Signal Strength is either equivalent to the T6xx series or a little under it. But the clarity of the voice is much better than the T6xx series, so that's the tradeoff. In using the K750i, I rather the clarity at 1 bar, than it just dropping the call on the T6xx series.

I'm not sure if Southern California has a decent number of 1900 Mhz towers but in Northern Los Angeles County, Los Angeles Metro, and Southern Ventura County, I have no problem having 4 bars at all time.
The reason I buy phones from myworldphone.com is because they are unlocked. I always like having the freedom (Especially now that numbers are portable) to come and go from Cingular to T-Mobile as I please. I've never been locked into any sort of contract so it gives me the flexibility to change my plan as much as I want.

If you know someone that has a phone flasher, the esato forums are buzzing about the W800i firmware being leaked. Apparently this is the retail W800i firmware and it flashes perfectly onto the K750i. The only thing it really changes is the media player and the music button on the side of the phone goes directly to that media player. I don't know what the big deal is, the media player int he K750i is fantastic. It allows you to play Mp3s, create playlist, browse the entire library, make any song in your library into a ring tone, plays Mp4 files. It's fantastic.
Of course the firmware does not enable 850 Mhz tower support, as that is the only hardware difference between the two phones (that and it's not bright orange).

I'm not into doing a firmware flash from the W800i to the K750i. Costs money, and it voids the warranty.
The firmware adds flight mode among other things. Flight mode allows you to use the phone with the wireless turned off. Perfect for an airplane.

Neither phone has 850 MHz. The only physical difference is the housing, which includes the sliding lens cover on the k750i. The hardware is otherwise the same. The upcoming W600/W550 are quadband, but lack a lot of the W800/K750 features.
I've been wondering just how much better the media player is on the w800i, but haven't seen a point-by-point comparison of the differences..

Will this phone or the W800i play live streaming video? MPEG4 or h.264?

i have the same phone (been had it since july 4th?)
awesome phone
never thought i'd use the camera but i've used it to take snaps of things i'm too lazy to write down or hand copy or whatever. good quality (it'll actually focus instead of snapping at a fixed depth)
i like how it's so customizeable. themes, shortcuts, everything. my gripe is that the earpiece isnt that loud, but a blutooth headset or a firmware update (in the future) should fix it. oh .. and having speakerphone/radio/mp3/video etc etc etc in one small (and good looking) handset is awesome.
one thing they could have done is made the screen a little bit bigger, but i'm impressed as it is.
enjoy your phone!

I only have one other gripe. On the T6xx series of phones, when you got a new text message you had the option of "Reply and Delete". It saved time and it made it so you didn't fill up your phone's memory like when people send you "Hi!". This phone just has "Reply" and then after you are done you have to navigate back to the Text messages and delete. A little annoyance.

OK, after the disappointing ROKR, I think I've narrowed it down to the 800 or the 750. I have a few questions though, as I'm about ready to get out of the mobile stone age.
1) I'm currently with T-Mobile (who I'm not leaving due to the plan I've got) in Los Angeles. Am I outright unable to use these phones for any reason?
2) Do I just need to bring my SIM card with me from my old *cough*moto v66*cough* to the new hotness? Will it even work with that phone?
3) Do these work wirelessly with Tiger out of the box, or do I need to get any special adapters, etc? (I've got Bluetooth on all my machines).
4) Is it possible to set this up to use t-zones and whatever other stuff t-mobile wants to gouge me on?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide... I'd been wanting to upgrade for months and months but I held out for this... and it was a major disappointment. These s/e phones are the hotness though.

1.) I heard a rumor that in some areas T-Mobile and CIngular share cell towers. If that's true in this area, it will work great with Cingular's towers.
2.) Yes it will work fine as long as you buy the phone unlocked from some place like myworldphone.com
3.) Right out of the box baby. Bluetooth Setup Assistant
4.) I would imagine, I could use the wireless data plan with cingular, I would imagine it would be no different, but because you are buying a non-T-Mobile pre-branded phone you'll need to enter in all the data yourself on how to access the data gateways, etc.

Awesome. After reading some reviews, I'm so sold on it. Think I'm gonna go with the 800 since I like the look a little better (and, expecting Apple to charge an arm and a leg for the ROKR I had earmarked $500 for a phone in the first place).
Thanks for the info. I'm totally psyched about it now. And I can finally ditch this godawful v66 after years of ashamed use.

That is indeed a droolworthy phone! I wonder how well it'll work in the Northeast. iDriveX, how was your experience dealing with myworldphones.com? Also, is it a big deal to walk into a Cingular store and have them activate a phone they don't sell? TIA

That settles it. The ROKR iTunes phone sucks.
It's now not a matter of if, but when I will get the W800i. Or perhaps its replacement next year.
The only thing holding me back is the price. The W800i is CAD$690 locally, which is US$580. For a damn phone.

Yeah.. I say spring afew hundred more and just get a pda phone--P800/P910i look very nice. I've seen them in person (never owned one though) and they do seem.. very very slick.

That is indeed a droolworthy phone! I wonder how well it'll work in the Northeast. iDriveX, how was your experience dealing with myworldphones.com? Also, is it a big deal to walk into a Cingular store and have them activate a phone they don't sell? TIA
myworldphone.com is phenomenal. I have bought from them a T68i, a T610, a T616, a T630, a T637, a Motorola RAZR (Black), and finally my K750i. They accept PayPal which is a huge plus and they only ship UPS 2-day anywhere in the country. Order it at a decent hour on a Monday morning over over the weekend and you will always have it by Wednesday. Their prices can't be beat, I even price it out on eBay and no one is selling a new in unit box for less than them. I can't tell you how their customer service is because I've never had to call them, they've always just "worked".
As far as "activating" the phone is concerned. I'm not sure what you mean. If you have an existing cell phone from cingular that has a Cingular SIM Card in it, just pop out the SIM card and pop it into your new phone. Cingular doesn't need to know what phone you are using or if you are trading phones back and forth. Buying unlocked phones is genius because it gives you the freedom to avoid any sort of contracts. If you bought a phone with Cingular with a one or two year contract, just swap the card into your new phone and away you go. You aren't locked into a phone in that contract, just the SIM card. They don't tell you that because they don't want you to have that freedom. I get e-mails from them all the time and inserts in my monthly bill that try and entice me to get a RAZR for $50 if I agree to a new two year contract. No thanks...I'll pay a little more and keep my freedom. PLUS, selling a phone that you've used that is unlocked has a much higher resell value on eBay than a phone that is prebranded and locked into a Cingular SIM card.
The only thing holding me back is the price. The W800i is CAD$690 locally, which is US$580. For a damn phone.
That's what made me buy a K750 instead of the W800. It's about a $200 US price differential for a slightly better media player. If you have towers in your neck of the woods that support the K750i, I would say it's always a better buy than the Sony Walkman phone. Plus, I have no gripes about the media player in the K750, great playlist support, and great quality sound.
Yeah.. I say spring afew hundred more and just get a pda phone--P800/P910i look very nice. I've seen them in person (never owned one though) and they do seem.. very very slick.
My dream phone would be something like the forthcoming HP hw6515 in the first half of 2006. Runs WinMo 5, bluetooth, Wifi, QWERTY Keyboard. It's a thing of beauty. But I've also seen prototypes of the Treo running WinMo5 as well. My dream phone would be something like that with an installation of iTunes Mobile on it. If Apple was smart they'd sell iTunes Mobile for about $50 for installation on any Windows Mobile 5 device or Treo. Or develop a Java Player for a phone like the K750i. THAT would be fantastic.

I just got a RAZR to use with Tmobile in the Los Angeles Metro area, but have 30 days to return it and am still thinking hard about the K750. One key question I'm hoping someone can answer for me:
When synching Address Book entries via iSync, does the K750 properly store entries that you've marked as Companys in Address Book? In other words, if you have an Address Book record for your local Kinkos (no first or last name included), will it show up on your K750 as Kinkos, and be in the K section of the phone book?
On my old SE 610, Company-Only entries (Kinkos, Goodguys, CompUSA, etc.) never came over to the phone properly. They showed up with some weird characters ahead of their names, and weren't listed in the phone alphabetically. I'm hoping that's finally changed!
Any info appreciated, thanks!

No that hasn't changed yet, but a simple solution to this is to just put the company name in the "Last Name" field. I know we are Mac users and we want everything to work perfectly and look nice while we're doing it but that's the easiest way to make sure it looks normal on the phone and is listed correctly in alphabetical order.

Thanks for the reply, iDriveX. And you're right: my tendency to want things to work perfectly, and to express order in a world of chaos, sometimes gets the best of me. Still, I suppose I can live with entering a last name for my Company-only records, if I get the K750.
We'll see. I have 30 days to evaluate this RAZR. I love the slim form factor, but have been using Sony phones for a long time, and find they still call to me. ;-)

y'know, I could swear I recently saw a link to a program that includes an iTunes device plug-in for these phones, making your phone show up in iTunes source list when you plug it in. It had some other handy features as well, though I can't remember what they were offhand. Other things I can't remember: what it was called, and where I saw the link to it.
But it seemed pretty cool, and probably worth the $13 or so shareware fee.
Anyway, versiontracker and macupdate searches are proving unusually fruitless, so do any of y'all 'NNers know what I'm talking about?

Oh God I wish there was a product like that but I can almost guarantee with certainty there is not or else it would be all over the esato.com forums all the time. I've already asked that question there and the answer I always get it "Search the Forums" and then "Just drag and drop out of your iTunes library"

The K750i will be my next normal phone. I'm waiting until after my trip to Europe next month in case the price goes down a little. I'll be selling my K700 to a friend of mine.
BTW I found this link which is a good FAQ for new K750 users.

I don't know about other phones, but The Missing Sync does this for Palm devices.

Yeah, I know about the Missing Sync, which seems really cool for Palm users(I haven't bought it for my Tungsten T3 because I don't expect to get much use out of it once I have a nice phone), but there's not a version for SE phones. It was something from a small developer, as in one person. I'm pretty sure he had an Asian name, though I can't remember what specific nationality it sounded like.. I was about to tell someone at howardforums about the thing and realized I lost it. Damned shame, as I wanted to try it out when I get my phone..

The other option is the D750:

Actually, I read that T-Mobile was going to offer their branded version for the U.S., the D750. This hasn't happened, though.

Cingular is switching it all over to 850Mhz, at least in Northern California, and that excludes the use of the k750 or W800. It also excludes the use of my Z600 which I've been using happily with T-Mobile, but I might want to switch at some point in the future. Cingular gets somewhat (sometimes significantly) better reception in my county. I just need a phone that does 850 and 1900MHz, like the ROKR, then I won't have to worry. But I don't want the ROKR, I demand more than 100 songs and a camera at least as good as in these SE's.

After reading all the posts, i am so interested with the 750, 800 too. However, I bought the unlocked k700i last year and it sucks big way. When you press a button, it has at least 10 second delays, and it makes me wonder for buying another sony ericsson phone again. Are the 750 and 800 phone responsive to command?

Also, this guy has some info on the W800/K750/D750 on OS X.
I forgot to mention that the extension that guy mentions is crucial, I already have that installed. No Kernal Panics.
Also you will want to go to macupdate.com and search for a program called "FinderCleaner". When you are dragging and dropping Mp3 Files into your memory stick, Mac OS X creates tiny little .dsstore files. These invisible files on the K750i will render the music unplayable. So when ejecting your phone you'll want to run it through "FinderCleaner" first, and then eject it. FinderCleaner will search for any .DSstore files and resource forks and delete them on the phone and then eject it for you.
Finally, I don't use the Address Book bluetooth connect. I use a great program called BluePhoneElite that does everything Address Book does plus so much more! It even interfaces directly with Address Book so that when an incoming call comes in, it will cross reference it with Address Book and then display the name on the screen as it comes in. It does a lot of other stuff too like a running Caller ID log, preference to display in the menu bar or the dock, in the menu bar or dock show signal strength and battery power, an "instant message" format for Text messages, and management of phone logs from the computer.
Cingular is switching it all over to 850Mhz, at least in Northern California
They better not do that down here in SoCal or I'll be up Sh*t's creek without a paddle!

There are numerous reviews on places like esato.com and burnmobile.com regarding the K750i. It's plenty responsive to me, I haven't noticed ANYTHING delaying 10 seconds. Perhaps you had a defective phone?

Hardcat, I know what you mean about the long delays with the K700. I tried that phone for a few days, and was shocked that the interface just stopped responding to stick or keypad input for seconds at a time. (I noticed that it only did this when running on battery power, not AC power). A number of other people have complained about this, but I'm not sure that all users have encountered it. I doubt that all have, since it really made the phone unusable. At any rate, I returned the thing, due to that "bug".

I just got home from getting a K750i. Haven't had too much time to play with it, but I'll probably be babbling about it a lot here. For iDriveX or anyone else who's got one: got any recommendations for belt clip, screen protector, or other accessories? Also, who knows where the deals are on Memory Stick Pro Duos? I'd like to be carrying lots of audio and pics by next week..
Thanks. Y.

Address Book does those things out of the box.

Just went out and bought the k750i phone. And just like you said, it is excellent much better than my k700 phone. I am still playing with it at the moment. Thanks for your tip!
