I picked up this little phone when I moved to Shanghai - my old Nokia didn't have a proper frequency... it's just a cute little simple camera phone, but I can't get my Mac to recognize it.

When I connect it through USB, nothing happens. The iMac doesn't see it, and the phone doesn't make any sort of change. The CD the phone came with is strictly Windows, and I can't find anything about it on the net. All the links for "motorola v220 drivers" are those generated web URLs that go nowhere.

Apple's iSync page says that it's compatible with the V220, but iSync can't detect it.

Any help?

iSync sees the Motorola V180-I think it should see the V220 as well...

Well, iSync sees it now...

But, all I really want to do is grab some pictures off of the phone without having to email them to myself. Is this possible?

While iSync sees the phone, it doesn't appear on my desktop...

I've tried getting the pictures off a V220 before with no luck. iSync worked but I could never figure out the pictures. I believe the phone works with an app called Phone Tools that's Windows only.

With Motorola phones, if you don't have Bluetooth or a phone that has external memory storage, there's no way for you to get the pictures off the phone other than e-mailing them to yourself or using the mobilePhoneTools app in Windows. You could try using the app under Virtual PC, that'd probably be your best bet, but it wasn't the easiest thing to set up when I had my no-Bluetooth V300 As far as I know, there's no Mac app to do such.

So you're saying if a phone has Bluetooth you can get the pictures from it without mobilePhoneTools?

In most cases, yes. And I'm pretty sure that all Motorola phones with Bluetooth have this capability.

I have a V620, and I'm able to transfer pictures and audio via bluetooth. Both from and to the phone. Works like a charm

Had a V600 and currently have a V635 here. I love the V6xx series phones; nice stuff, aren't they?

What is it about Bluetooth that allows for the picture and audio transfer? Why is USB so useless? I would think you're accessing the phone the same way wireless or not?

USB and Bluetooth are extremely different interfaces and communication protocols. Your statement is like saying "my rowboat goes in the water, and ducks go in the water, so my rowboat should quack." They are THAT different.

The USB interface is limited to the drivers built into the computer, AS IS the Bluetooth interface. But since the Bluetooth interface is designed to connect to just about anything (and many Moto phones have Bluetooth) you can use it.

You can buy it from Motorola, or search for it online-you'll find it for a lot less if you look around. You shouldn't pay much more than $25 or so.

Gotcha. We're not talking about sending a file over Airport vs Ethernet here. That's what I was originally thinking.

Nope, Bluetooth is basically an agnostic system-it'll send anything. And that can be a problem when the "inquisitive and inventive" folks get busy. There is such a thing as Bluetooth hacking-it's called Bluejacking. Keep "automatic discovery" or whatever it's called on your phone OFF when you're in public!
