I would very much appreciate any help/advice/recommendations from anyone who is knowledgeable about printer options.

I have an iBook G4 running OS X 10.4 I have been using an HP all-in-one printer/copier/scanner/fax that is now a little more than two years old. When I bought it, I was assured that it was Mac compatible. I have since discovered that it is very difficult to get tech support for it. Once it was a few months old, help came only at the cost of an arm and a leg, and only once did it come from someone who knew anything about Macs. We don't even have the same options.

Over the last few weeks, my all-in-one has become more and more uncooperative. I gave up on the fax part last spring. Now it prints only when it feels like it, which isn't often. Usually it just spits out blank or partially printed paper at me. It still copies, but who knows for how long.

Obviously I'm not thrilled about continuing to deal with HP. It doesn't make sense to sink more money into trying to fix this machine. I'm relatively newly self-employed, and having reliable equipment is essential. Space and money are significant factors. The nearest Apple store is more than 200 miles away, so I am at the mercy of either online resources or big box stores like Office Depot.

I need to do something about this very soon. I'm now reduced to emailing my documents to a friend who prints them, but I have to drive across town to pick them up. This is not working!

What advice or recommendations can you give me? I would be so grateful for any suggestions you might have!

Thank you --

Suzy

First suggestion -- please post in the right place! This question isn't about an iBook -- it's about a printer, and thus goes in the Peripherals forum. Seeing as how you're new here, I've moved it for you, but please pay attention in the future!

Regardless, you'll find that a huge number of people here have had great experiences with Canon inkjet printers. They're fast, quiet, have great print quality, have great drivers, use cheap ink (for original ink), and seem to be reliable -- no pesky head clogging or internal leaking. Oh, and almost all models come with built-in double sided printing.

Search the peripherals forum, you'll find lots of experiences with Canon inkjets.

Do you want just a printer or a new all-in-one. Your thread title seems to allude to the former, but judging from your story, your all-in-one will give up on you soon.

No matter what you do, do yourself a favor and invest in a laser. Or in a laser all-in-one. They cost more initially, but consumables cost less and they are usually more reliable.

If you give us a budget and a type of machine, I'm sure we can be more specific.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
