I'm confused about High Def.

Basically I'm thinking about buying a new lcd display for my ibook, I would also like to play playstation3/xbox at HD quality on the display.

I was thinking about the sony MFM-HT75S

http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/i...tures/570418710

But I dont really need the tv option. If i buy any lcd with a 1280x720 res or higher will this display the ps3 in full hd quality? Also does anyone know what kind of connector ps3 uses for hd output and what displays are compatible?

The X Box 360 has a VGA HD AV Cable...

Website says...

Showcase stunning Xbox 360 high-definition graphics on your PC monitor or HDTV using the VGA input. Play high-quality audio with the included Stereo connection or utilize the Optical Audio port for digital sound.
Suggested retail price: $39.99

So basically what i'm asking is, do I need to get the expensive sony, or will a good quality standard lcd with vga do the trick?

as i understand it, hd resolution requires a 1920x1200 resolution or better. perhaps i read wrong, but i thought i read somewhere that if you don't have that resolution you cant natively run true hd content.

It's actually 1920x1080. That's for 1080i programming. The Dell 2405FPW 24" widescreen display is one of the very few LCDs that have component video inputs, so it will display HD sources through that. Until the other boxes are on the street, it's all speculation.

That Sony looks like a poor choice unless you were buying it specifically to be a bedroom-type 17" TV. You can buy the widescreen 20" Dell 2005FPW for mid-$400s on sale and have 1680x1050 resolution. Plus it doesn't have that fugly Sony 6" wide bright silver plastic bezel.

As an aside, the 1280x768 Sony is capable of HD display, as it would down-sample the interlaced 1080i content to progressive 720p. 720p content would be displayed natively.

The PS3 HD specs are generally available - it has dual HDMI outputs both capable of 1080p. I'll definitely be picking up a 1080p projector along with the PS3. Doesn't mean every game will output at 1080p though, I assume some might be 720p.

While there is some doubt about the second HDMI output being included in the final PS3 when it's released, a single HDMI output is locked in, 100% certainly. I hope the second HDMI output makes the final cut, playing 32:9 Gran Turismo sounds pretty good....
