I just purchased an Addonics AE5SACSUF External Firewire SATA Drive Enclosure (http://www.addonics.com/products/enc...e5idecsu2f.asp) to house a new Western Digital Caviar 320GB SATA Drive. When I assembled the drive and enclosure then connected it, I expected to see an External Drive icon appear on my desktop. Instead what I got was "This Drive can not be read" then a prompt for initializing or ejecting. I initialized, then Disk Utility started up. It reads the specs on the drive fine and reports them in Disk Utility as if the drive is ready to be erased and partitioned. The one peculiarity is that DU reports that SMART does not work on this drive.

If I try to Erase the drive, I get a beach ball for a long time then an error "Can Not be Erased". If I try to add a partition, I get an error message stating there is a "Bad Partition" after another long bout with the beach ball.

So, either the enclosure is incompatible or the drive itself is a dud/incompatible, although I've never heard of a hard drive being incompatible like this...

Opinions?
