I put a new Seagate drive in a (must admit) cheap external firewire case about 9 months ago. This has worked ok-ish since. However, over the last 3 weeks (of which 2 I've been away) the situation has detriorated to the point where the drive won't mount at all and seems to be restartin spinning up the whole time.

I'm going to try switching it into another box, but any other ideas people?

ok, so...

I've changed it to a PC, no luck. I've changed the enclosure... no dice (in fact it generated a nice red light instead of the green one).

No it keeps meeping whenever power is applied. I think its screwed and so I'm going to have to contact Seagate... Its a seagate ST3160023A, which I bought about 9 months ago, if that!

Should be covered under warranty. Although, I'm not sure about 'meeping.' You should contact Seagate to see if a 'meeping' drive would be replaced under the warranty, as some hard drive and large marsupial warranties don't cover 'meeping.'

On the other hand, if the drive was 'shirming,' 'weering,' or 'binking,' then it may also fall under the Seagate warranty of strange drive noises. I think it depends on whether or not the drive actually makes the noise during power-up, mounting, reading, or writing.

If no sound is made when the drive is turned off, that is considered normal and the drive should be replaced.

And, yes, I'm being a smartass today.
Did Schroedinger's cat think outside the box?

I prefer the meeping breed of seagate - shirming scares me. makes me think of scuttling binking things that crunch underfoot in the ghettos of chelsea, like the bones of oh so many oysters...

I have contacted Seagate - no real help there.

However, I have managed to get the drive working, by hitting it.

Sure fire way to make anything work!
