What is your mouse surface? Is it something with a repeating pattern or plain? I have had this problem on "wood grain" desktops. The grain confuses the mouse.

no - it's on a standard mouse pad which isn't worn or anything

the funny thing is when I had the original hockey puck mouse attached - it used to freeze now and again

aswell as the pointer jumping to another corner of the screen my pro mouse also freezes occasionally

Standard mouse pad? Most hard-surface mouse mats are printed with a pattern or logo or picture of some kind, and the printing leaves repeating patterns that can confuse optical mice. Fabric mouse mats generally have a repeating weave pattern (sometimes printed, too!) which can also confuse optical mice.

See what happens if you use a plain, unprinted sheet of white paper as a mouse mat. If the problem goes away, you solved it and just need to find a mouse mat with no repeating pattern. If the problem persists, then it's something else.

This sort of thing happens a lot with optical mice. Usually when you life it a bit off the surface.

thanx for that

the mouse pad a picture of a siloutted tree against an orange sunset - with lots of intermangled branches

sorry - I had no idea the pattern of the mouse pad could confuse the mouse

it's now working fine on a sheet of paper

It's probably not the branches, but the surface texture of the mouse mat and/or the dither pattern in the printing. Mats either fabric (which has a repeating weave) or textured plastic, and either has the potential to confuse, as does the dither pattern in the printing (the small "rosettes" you see when you look at color printing under magnification).
