If I had a 30" Apple Cinema Display, what would happen if I plugged it into a single-link DVI port?

Would it use part of the available pixels on the display to render the graphics? Or will it not render at all?

I'm wondering because I do some work at home on Windows/PC boxes that normally don't have dual-link DVI ports, and would HIGHLY rather having ONE screen [for the G5] instead of having an extra monitor on my desk, just to do the occassional troubleshooting of various boxes.

Any suggestions/help would be great

You'll be limited to 1280x800 pixels, scaled up to the full 30" display. But it'll work.

You could run it at 1920x1200 or 1600x1200 at 60Hz. Or you could get a video card with a duallink DVI port for your PC for a couple hundred dollars.

I don't know if the image would be stretched to fill the screen, in the upper left corner, or centered.

That's awesome. I don't need the quality to be perfect, just usable to quickly troubleshoot Windows boxes.

Have you tried the stretched 1280x800 pixel screen? how does it look [in terms of pixelation]?

Not too bad, actually, since it maps 1 pixel down to a 2x2 block. But with 1280x800 at 30" diagonal, text looks BIG!

No, you cannot. The 30" on a single-link DVI locks in to 1280x800 streched.

Do you know why they did that, when single link DVI is capable of higher resolutions?
Quarter resolution is easier to scale, but it's unfortunate you can't use more pixels without duallink DVI.
