i bought a new maxtor external hd new , and i was using it on my ibook as backup. Well i had to send my ibook in to get looked at, and i needed a picture off my hd, so i hooked it up to my dell pc laptop, and it was able to read the stuff on it, i got the picture, and unplugged it. I now has a powerbook, and i plugged it into the powerbook, but it says a device was plugged in with no volumes mac osx can read. What can i do? is all my information gone ? i think i ran disk utility, but still nothing . what happened???

What system is the drive formatted in? That's pretty important. I think Tiger is capable of reading more formats than Panther.

I'm guessing that your Maxtor HD may have been formatted in FAT32, but both Panther and Tiger should have no problems reading it. I don't think that Tiger has write support for NTFS yet, so I doubt that the drive was in NTFS format.

One way to find out is to press Command-I (Get Info) on the external hard drive while connected to the iBook to determine what format its in.

Try resetting the PRAM. Sometimes the FW port fuse trips and needs to be reset. Worked for me.

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.

deermatt, what is the format of the volume? Is it MS-DOS (FAT32) or Mac OS Extended/Journaled (HFS+)? What about connecting it over USB instead of Firewire (or Firewire instead of USB)?

Try taking a look at your Mac's system logs. Run Applications/Utilities/Console, then choose "File > Open System Logs". It should show your Mac attempting to read/mount the volume.

You need to be a bit more specific.
Which model PowerBook? Can't connect via AirPort or ethernet (or modem)? If wireless, is the network password protected? Are you using a third-party access point, or an Apple device?
Just world wide web browsing having problems; can you connect to an email server?
Please try to be as specific as possible.
