I have philips '4.7gb 1-8x speed dvd+r' dvd's that I want to burn, but my powerbook g4 will not allow me to burn faster than 2.4x (according to specs it can burn up to 8x).
Can somebody telll me what's going on and if there is anything I can do to make recognise the dvd as 1-8x?

Some drive/disc combinations just don't give you maximum speed. (Basically, if a drive sees a media type it doesn't recognize, it'll probably err on the side of caution and burn slowly.)
