I arrived home the other day to my soundsticks making a horrible buzzing sound and a nasty burning smell coming from the sub. It smelt really strongly of burning rubber. 4 hours later and I still can't get the smell out of my room. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I don't dare plug it back into my computer, no idea what happened. I think they're ruined though.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Tom.

New speakers would ge good. they'd probably sound better too.
I have Soundsticks. I've had them for over 3 years. They sound really nice, but the bass is weak compared to some others I've heard. They look pretty nice though, that's worth something. and overall the sound is really quite good.
All that said, I'm sure the sound would be quite worse if I cooked them.
Take them apart and find out (in a non USB kinda way) if the speakers still work and sound proper. Play with them after you've gotten some dope speakers.

Argh!
Were these first-gen SoundSticks? I've a set (purchased in 2000 when I was at uni) which are still - touch wood - working fine, currently flanking my iMac G5.
I hope all units of a similar age don't suddenly start spontaneously melting down! (I can just imagine the melted puddle of transparent plastic, the weighted ring stripped to bare metal, and warped transducers embedded in the mess. Not a pretty thought.
I'd better put iTunes to work before my SoundSticks give up the ghost…

Yes - the Soundsticks are actually quite nicely balanced, rather than trying to impress with booming idiocy.
A little weak in the mid-range, but pretty good as far as satellite-sub combinations go.
If you want something that booms but sounds completely crap, try the JBL creatures. Those are terrible.

no thanks on the Creatures.
I was speaking of Klipsch and Logitech 2.1 systems as a comparison of bass reproduction.
