Does it make much difference which type or brand of USB Hub you buy?

Brands? Not really. Don't buy the bottom of the barrel stuff.

Type? If your devices need lots of power, get a powered hub. If they don't (mice, keyboards, joysticks, printers, scanners, and such) then you can get away with an unpowered hub.
