Well, I've finally done it, I've wrecked my first file system. I accidentally unplugged my external firewire hard drive without unmounting it first, and now the computer won't recognize it. I also plugged it into my linux box, and tried hpfsck, but it said the filesystem headers weren't hfsplus.

So if fsck fails, is there any other way to recover the drive? Disk Utility doesn't even give me the repair option.

If not... I've lost a lot of data, and learned to always unmount your drives and use journaling filesystems.

DiskWarrior might be a good bet if the partition is seen in disk utility, just not usable.

And if DiskWarrior fails over FireWire, take the IDE drive out of the FireWire case and install it directly inside a Mac.

That could be a problem when you only have a PB
Apple Powerbook 17" 1,67 GHz, 2 gig RAM, 100 gig HDD, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB, Superdrive 8X

Then you find someone who'll let you put the thing in their Mac and run DiskWarrior!

The fact is, what I said IS the next step. Whether you have a Power Mac or not doesn't change the fact that what I said is the next thing you must do.

Besides, did you notice that this was posted in the Power Mac forum, after all...

"Directory cannot be rebuilt, file system is not supported."

No luck with DiskWarrior.

It looks like the filesystem headers are gone... is there any way I can get them back, like a mkfs.hfsplus type thing?

I've never had to mess with a corrupt Mac drive-though I've done enough work with PC drives to write a book about it. Look at some of the tools here for something that might help. Basically the best tools I've found for PCs will find files by the file data, NOT where the drive's headers say they're supposed to be. This has been a pretty successful strategy for me. Let me warn you though, it won't be a "one click" experience if you go this route.

I think your best bet is try Data Rescue X at this point, or else send your drive to a data recovery service.

You can download a demo of Data Rescue X to see whether it can recover any files before you purchase it.

Can Disk Utility see the disc?, If so, try to create an image of it.

^ Try this first, though. I've had DiskWarrior fail (hang) over FireWire but work over IDE.

Data Rescue II works! Thank you so much! I knew I could trust MacNN (though, I must admit, I had already begun the coping process just in case).

<snip> Apparently not. Anyway, my data is saved!
