I just got a new iMac DV SE. It replaced a PowerMac 7200/75.

With the 40 gig drive in the new iMac I was looking into various options for back-up. Popping CDs in and out of the thing for hours did not seem like fun, and other removable media would be just as tedious and more expensive.

I then hit on the idea of using the old PowerMac for backup. Big SCSI drives are a bit pricey, but IDE drives are pretty cheap. All I need is an inexpensive IDE card. It seems that you can get IDE cards for PCs for about $30, but the only ones I can find for Macs are in the $100 range. Buy the time I spend $100 for a card and $150 or so for a big IDE drive, I could just by an external firewire drive and be done with.

Before I go that route, does anyone know of a good, inexpensive IDE card, and where I might get one?

the only one that I am aware of is the Sonnet Technologies Tempo Ultra ATA 66.

I also may move towards IDE due to its cheapter cost on my PM 9500/200 BLACK

There are no cheap IDE cards for Macs like there are for PCs. Sonnet, VST, and Promax are some of the companies that make them. I had a Sonnet and had a lot of problems with it. I'm thinking of getting the VST instead.

Well, I was afraid of that. I have seen 60 gig fire wire drives for about $270. If the card costs $100, using the old 7200 is not going to be that much cheaper. Given the space that the old computer takes up, I have to wonder if the fireweed drive is not the better choice. After all, when not being used for back-up , it can go in the desk drawer. That takes up a lot less space around the house than a 7200 and its monitor and keyboard.

On the other hand If I were to keep the 7200, I could use it to share a good printer with the other two Macs in my home network. I also need a new printer, and the ones with Ethernet cost twice to three times the serial versions. Any comments on that idea?
