I'm considering getting either the Canoscan N650U or N1220U scanner, to go with a G3 Powerbook. I like these models because they're powered off the USB bus and therefore seem much more portable and versatile. Are there any drawbacks to this? Anybody have any feedback on either of these scanners, or know what bundled software they come with? Thanks.

I've got the N656U, which is exactly like the 650 but with a grey case. I've had no reservations with it at all. It's worked beautifully. People walk in and say, "THAT'S your scanner?", then want me to show them that it actually works.

I have the CanoScan N122OU and am very pleased with it. The only thing about it being USB powered is that mine requires that it is plugged into either the computer or a powered hub.Other than that very minor issue I only have good things to say about it. The base that is provided that allows you to stand it on its side makes it a real space saver.

Have some software because the stuff that comes with the Canoscan sucks. Hardware is adequate - scanning takes forever compared to SCSI or Firewire. The best thing is that you can yank the plug and store the unit on a bookshelf when you're not using it - Zero desk space requirement!

Has anyone else any recent feedback on the canoscan n1220u? What is the quality of its scans? Does it exceed my old UMAX Astra 1220s?

I've got the N656U and it has been a dream to work with. I was immediately drawn to the super-slim size (looks like a tiBook). Bus-powered is a great feature. I've got no problems with the time it takes to scan whatsoever. It creates top quality scans, it exceeds many larger and more expensive scanners. I'm a graphic designer and I sometimes wish I'd gotten the next level up but the N656U does all I need it to at this point.

Go for it!

I've had a Canoscan 1220U for quite some time and I'm very happy with it. I wish it was faster, but that's the price you pay for going the USB route. There is a new model and it seems to be the same except for the color of the case and more buttons on the front. The 1220U has one button that launches the included Canon software, but I scan directly into photoshop so I never use it. The build quality it good, it doesn't flex or seem poorly assembled. Plus, it really cool to look at, its an excellent match for those who own TiBooks. Well, that's my $.02USD.

Check out the reviews at www.pcworld.com and popular photography (don't have the link for that one).

The Canons use CIS technology, which, all else being equal, is not quite as good as the more conventional CCD technology, but is plenty good enough for non-professional use. If compactness and USB-power are important to you, by all means get a Canon. If speed and accuracy are more important to you, get an Epson.

I have both the Canon 1220u and the UMax 2200. If there is a difference in quality of scans, I really have not seen it. Like one poster here said, I/we wish it were faster. But, other than that I have not got a single complaint about either of them.

I'm thinking about getting a Canon CanoScan N670U.
I have two questions that i'm hoping somone will answer.

1. It is a 600 x 1200 dpi scanner. I know what dpi is but I do not understand what does the order of the numbers mean. For example what would the difference be between 600 x 1200 dpi and 1200 x 600 dpi?

2. Someone said in there post that it requires a powered USB port.
Would an Apple Pro Keyboard's extra port work for this?

Thank you.

i just picked up a canon n1220u from www.jandr.com for $79. it is refurbished, but i've been playing with it and it works great. the compact size and usb power make it ideal for my mobile needs (fits right into the side slot of my computer bag). not the fastest or the best, but for the money a nice deal.

note that the website doesn't have the $79 price. you have to call them and tell them you saw the ad in the new york times listing it at $99 minus immediate $20 off. (if you live in nyc metro area they are shipping ups ground at no extra charge (i got mine the next day.)
