Hi all,

MY DSL connection is getting hooked up this week and I'm looking to get a new firewire HD and CD burner for my 1St gen. Graphite iMac. I had a QPS 8x firewire burner that crapped out on me after 2 years. I was quite happy with it, but i heard the new QPS drives don't have as reliable a burner mechanism(not sure what the geek word for that is). I'm looking to spend a combined $400 and don't need the biggest or fastest drive, I'm looking for reliability.
One CDR burner I was looking at was the Smartdisk VST Portable 8x8x24 Firewire CD-RW. Anyone have something to share about it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I bought an external 5.25" Firewire case from CompuVest ($67) and use it with a 24X Teac burner (which is one of the best rated, and now goes for ~$90). The case uses the Initio chipset. Works great with Toast on my iBook and Nero on my PC.

If you get one for your hard drive, then just make sure it has the Oxford 911 chipset. I have a drive from Transintl.com and it worked great on my iBook - it came preformatted with HFS+. (I reformatted it to NTFS and only use it with my PC though.) You can buy the same empty case from OWC.
