I've been waiting patiently for the newer model of the PowerShot S40 to be supported by iPhoto and so far no luck because of that I'm forced to use XP and the Photo Album power tool to post my pictures online (which does an OK job).

Is there any type of work around so that I could actually use my camera with iPhoto or am I forced to sit around until Apple updates their list. Also, will an iPhoto upgrade, like the one out today solve this or is this an OS X upgrade that is needed?

Thanks in advance.

I use the KODAK Multi-Card Reader.
USB works beautifully, seamlessly with iPhoto.
Reads CF, MMC, SD, and SmartMedia Cards.
(No power cable to mess with, either. Saves camera battery power.)
http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/stor...l?PRODID=21220

I've also seen it at Wal*Mart. $39
Good luck!

shady,

According to the Apple web page right here, the Powershot S40 is compatible with the latest 1.1.1 version of iPhoto. Is that what you are using?

The Lexar Firewire CompactFlash reader works well. I use it both with my OS X.1 iBook and with Windows XP. Much faster than USB.

$49.95 at B&H Photo. See here.

I second the recommendation for a Firewire CompactFlash reader. I use the one from Unity Digital; it cost me about $75 and is much, much, much faster than the USB reader. It's saved me the difference in cost many times over. Works great with OSX.

Yeah, but does it support MMC, SD, or SMARTMEDIA like the Kodak does? USB CF readers can be found for under $10 nowadays and CF/Smartmedia combos can be had for $20. I agree that the extra money is worth it for firewire, but the compatability is nice and I was wondering if the firewire ones had it.

By the way do these readers mount the media on the desktop like a floppy would mount? I wouldn't want to have to use a clunky interface to transfer files to it. (I don't like saving important files to the hard drive without a backup and it would be an ideal way of backing up if they worked like floppies).

I'm not sure how different it is from the A40 but I use my Powershot A10 all the time on my system with iPoho just fine. Just plug it into a keyboard port, and she fires right up.

The A40 is a brand new model and was just recently released. I plug it into my TiPB and nothing happens when iPhoto is running, I plug it in before I start and it doesn't recognize, plug it in after its running and still nothing.

All around suck .

Since it's a new camera then it might get added into the next iPhoto version. Kinda like iTunes, it only worked with certain cd-r's till later in the year, and now it supports almost all the cd-r's out there.

Hi,

The Canon Powershot A40 will be supported by Mac OSX 10.1.5 which is supposed to be released really soon.

Have fun

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that Firewire card readers existed.

It is supported but only with iPhoto 1.1.1. Download the update if you haven't already. It works fine for me.

This is how to get iPhoto and Image Capture to recognize the canon A40:

1) Go into /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/Type4Camera.app/Contents folder, and find the file called info.plist. (To open the contents folder control click the Type4Camera.app)

2) To open this file use a text editor (BBEdit etc.) you will also need to have root access (for me personally it just asked for the admininstrator's password).

3) Scroll down to the bottom of the <dict> section. Add another <dict> entry with the following data: product:0x3058 and vendor:0x04A9
It will look like this:

<dict>
<key>product</key>
<string>0x3058</string>
<key>vendor</key>
<string>0x04A9</string>
</dict>

4)Save the file, log out and back in. Plug in the camera and you will be able to download your images! The camera doesn't come up on the desktop though and I don't know if you can download your .avi files though.

**I would also recommend making a copy of the original .info.plist before you start messing with it.

The guidelines above are for the a40 you would need the product id # for your camera which you can find when you boot in 9 with the camera connected and then look in the apple system profiler.

I have a a40 and I was got fed up booting up in 9 to download my pictures so I did a bit of searching and found that this type of hack had been applied to other cameras so I thought I would give it a shot and it worked Yay for me! I haven't downloaded the new version of iphoto though.

You can use any text editor i just happen to use bbedit. For me I right clicked it, found the file, changed it with my editor, and then just saved it in the normal fashion and that is when it asked for my administrator's password and i was done.

do you know of any way to get around that with Text Editor? Because it says that I don't have enough privlages, and you can't change the contents folder so whats up?

No idea there have to be some free editors out there bbedit lite check version tracker and if you don't have the administrator's password you are screwed. Download Xray and try to change the permissions.
