I know that this topic should go under the peripherals but i figured i would get a faster response here (sorry) I am going to buy an internal DVD burner for my slot loading IMAC G3 and put it in an firewire enclosure/case. The problem is i dont know what type of case to purchase. Whats the difference between them? Any help would be appreciated, thanks. By the way, a local store is selling an NEC 3548 internal DVD burner, are they any good?

sry for the numerous post (noob mistake)
Nope, they happen to everyone. WELCOME to the MacNN Forums!
And this DOES go under Peripherals-you'll get a MUCH faster, more well informed answer there, so I'm moving the thread there.

Hey....Well I don't think you should purchase anything at a local store, they usually charge you a lot more money and you have to pay taxes. Go to Cnet.com and type in the driver you are thinking of purchasing at your local store, find a trust worthy company and you will see how much cheaper it will be. Do some research before you go to the local stores
As for the cases, Firewire is the way to go, USB is too slow. Now it doesn't matter what enclosure you get, as long as it is firewire it will be the same thing....
Hope this helped...

mduell suggests:
Pioneer DVR-110D - $40, fastest burner on the market, Apple uses it in the PowerMacs, supported by OSX in all apps
Kingwin KH-525UF-S - $41, Oxford 911 chipset (good performance and works well with OSX), I'm happy with my Kingwin enclosures, although the LEDs on this one may be a bit much

Thanks for the advice guys, i bought a NEC 3550 (it had better reviews than the pioneer that was suggested) and an enclosure that cost around 40 bucks. I have one more question. The NEC internal drive is only supported by Windows, will my MAc recognize it when I install it in the firewire enclosure? Im running Panther on my imac. Thanks for the help!!
