I am looking to buy a new scanner for my workplace. We scan a lot of X-ray film images - we need the ability to scan 8x10 transparencies. The only choices it looks like we have are Epson and Microtek (refuse to by UMAX - that's the piece of junk we're getting rid of).

Microtek's EDIT technology for scanning transperencies without intervening glass sounds cool, and the Scanmaker 8700 has gotten good reviews. However, I have a question for anybody who has scanned transparencies using the 8700 or the ScanMaker 4 or 5.

Do the transpancies need to be a regular size (i.e. fit in a holder)? If I have a transpancy that's 8x8 or some other irregular size, will I be able to scan it using the Microtek? On the Epson, I can lay any transparency down on the glass, so this issue will be the deciding point.

Thanks!
Don
