Okay, so it's not my discs, not OS 9.1, not Toast.... something is messed up with my burner. It's a Yamaha CRW4416SXZ External SCSi2 burner.
My question: Can dust on the laser completely mess up a burn, but not be reported while burning?
Toast ususally tells you when there is a problem during a burn, but I'm burning fine, but afterwards the discs always have Read Errors. The burner self tests come back "OK" but after 8 tries at burning, nothing is getting better. I figured it had to be dust cause this started happening randomly without me changing the System or anything.
Does this sound right, and what kinda possible solutions do you think I should take?
Taking the drive apart, and using compressed air on the laser?
Getting one of the CD Cleaner Discs?
Taking the drive into a manufacturer?
Just looking for any advice, or if anyone else had a problem like this.

Use compressed air to make sure that there is no dust on the blank CDR and the tray before you burn.
You may have borderline media. Try burning at a slower speed and see if that helps.
I just got a CDR of some software from a friend and a couple times during install, I had read errors. Tried again and it worked. A second Mac read the disc fine. Disc was clean, drive was ok. Don't know what the problem might be, but I managed to copy the files without error once to the once disc so I don't need to depend on the CD anymore.

No dust on try or on CDs... the tray is clean, and the CDs are straight from shrinkwrap. I've burned from 1x through to 4x and get the same result, and the same Read Error in the same section.
Any more ideas?

Did this just start with this batch of discs that you got?
You say "straight from shrinkwrap", does this mean bulk discs or fresh jewelcases?
What brand are you using? See if you can get another brand to try before doing anything drastic.
Just some ideas to try. If the burner is old or has alot of mileage, it could be that. They do wear out with time!

One more idea -
If it has been a while, try cleaning the lens with a commercial CD cleaner. If they still make them, I would suggest the Allsop SoundPro Laser Lens Cleaner. It uses a dry, soft 8-brush on a disc. Also good for any other disc player and has sound diagnostics for Home Theater.
Good luck!
