Hello! I am new to this forum (and macs) and am looking for an external hard drive for a gift. My brother owns a mac (don't know exact kind) and wants an external hard drive, size 80 GB to 120 GB. All hard drives I have seen on the internet (newegg) have not stated whether they are for mac or pc. Does it have to say that it is for a mac, or can I buy any one I want? I would assume it would matter, since some say mac/pc requirements on the box. But others don't have any requirements. If someone could point me in the right direction on this question, and brand reliability, that would be great. Also, looking to spend around $100, not much more...thanks!

Welcome!

The drives you will be interested in will have either "Firewire 400" or "USB 2.0" (or both) for connecting to the computer. Firewire 400 is usually just called "Firewire".

If the drive has Firewire, it will almost undoubtedly be compatible. You can ask your brother whether his Mac has USB 2.0, and if it does, any USB 2.0 should be compatible as well.

I like my FireWire LaCie Porsche drive 80GB for $99 list. It's nice looking, but I'm pretty sure it's at the low end of the value for price scale.

If you want to post an web address from NewEgg, I (or someone else) can look at it and should be able to tell you if it's a go.

Other World Computing (OWC) supports all the US Mac magazines with multiple page spreads every month. I like to support those who support us. I've had favorable experience with OWC.

Most enclosures will work with both.
I'd suggest this enclosure (or you can get this one if he has USB2) and this 80GB drive (or you can get 120GB and stay inside your budget if he has USB2).

Rosewill uses the Oxford chipset, Macally does not--I'm not sure about the others. If you do not require Windows compatibility, then you should format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Despite some people who read negative comments about OWC, I've been using them for years with nothing but 100% satisfaction. Processor upgrades for two different machines, multiple external hard drive cases, video cards, RAM modules, hard drive mechanisms, and cables. All have been exactly as advertised and trouble-free.

Just a few days ago bought their new dual-drive FireWire 800 aluminum case (this one) to replace two individual drive cases. Its great. I moved two WD 160GB drives from FireWire 400 cases in to it. The two drives were previously formatted with software RAID 0. The new case's firmware-based RAID 0 and FW800 interface is noticeably faster. And the case is quiet and keeps the drives cooler than the individual cases did. And looks nice, too, sitting atop my G5.
