i've got a book on cd and i want to rip it onto my powerbook, but i'm not sure what to rip it at. since it's just talking, i thought i would rip it at 128 kbs max, but i'm not sure. what do people normally rip just talking at? is there a special setting? is there anything else i should know?
thanks

there was a long thread somewhere in these forums where many chimed in on what they rip at. the responses were extremely varied. I usually rip at 160 kbs or higher. If I'm ripping for someone else in order to burn them something, I rip at 128 just for speed and space, and my burner is 24x10x40. If you have the hd space and a quick cd-rom for ripping, then go for a high encoding.

but what about for just a book on cd? quality isn't as important as it is with music. i'm thinking i'll rip it at 128 kbs but i'd like to hear a few more replies about this first.

I've done a few long mp3's with just dialogue, and you can save a lot of space by making it mono, 11 khz, and about 56 kbps. What you should really do is encode a short portion of it at different bitrates and see where the quality falls off for your own descriminating ears.

128 should be fine. Some of my music is at 128, which I can notice, but talking will be fine.
LL is right though - try it yourself and see.
