Got a new Teac CD-W524E 24X internal IDE burner for the PC (Win XP).

On a whim I fired up CloneCD and stuck in my iBook Hardware Test disk. Did a superfast read, and then a superfast burn (at least compared to my iBook's 4X combo drive).

Stuck the disk in my iBook and rebooted. No problem. Booted up the test app and the functions all worked.

I'll try a direct on-the-fly CD-ROM to CD-R burn next to see if that works.

i've been backing up my mac CD-ROMs for a while using blindread/blindwrite. for some reason, it seemed to work better than cloneCD with the philips CD-RW drive that was in my pc at work. and it does a good job of backing up playstation games for use in CVGS.

i wish there was a program like this for mac...

That is nothing special. You can tell most CD burning apps to do a direct copy of a disk in another drive. Same reason you can burn Playstation games and such.

True. I just wasn't sure it would work consistently - hadn't seen too many people doing this. However, I'm not sure if Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.1 can easily make the copy, but I haven't tried it. And I wonder if the specific drive has anything to do with it, but I'm guessing most recent drives should be fine for Mac backups since there's no copy protection involved.

BTW, as I understand it you have to mod your PS2 to read the burnt PS2 games, no? I do know not just any drive will make usable copies though.

EDIT:

It seems one must either use a modded PS2, or else copy the game --> patch it --> burn it. Direct copies do not work.

What probs did you have with CloneCD?
