If you notice a funky chirp-like sound when rebooting, that's not the computer, but the CRT (I have no idea why)

seems to happen with trinitrons, and even though this may be me, I'd suggest turning your monitor off when rebooting....

It's probably just switching display modes.

Funny you should mention the chirping noise, I don't get it with my Powermac and Sony CRT monitor but I do hear it from my FP iMac when rebooting.

I don't know if we're talking about the same sound but it does sound like a chirping noise to me, it's very quick and doesn't affect the iMac in any way.

You get all kinds of wierd-ass noises when you power up/down, or change mode with CRTs, My sony makes loud clunking noises, and squeaks, whereas my dell degausses itself rather overenthusiastically on power up, which means I have to remember to switch it off before powering up the UPS, else the UPS gets upset and beeps at me.

I've not noticed any noises emanating my from my Sony G420. Now the chirping noises in my head; that's another story!

Yeah, my 17" Studio Display (ADC) does that sometimes, but only when it first turns on or has been on for ahile and then I restart (it won't do it every time) ... almost like it's degaussing itself. It spooked me the first time.

nah, it's a very high pitched sound (eeeewwwwwwwwwerp) and it does come from the sony display.. tried reboots without it turned on and the noise didn't happen...

still can't figure out why, and it might just happen on dual headed g4s, but it never happened with any other machine, and I guarantee you it isn't switching modes (like normal, at least!!!)

It could just be my 17" showing it's age.. it's 5 years old and is well used (good ole sony vaio 220VS), but didn't think it was THAT bad in shape.

i have a 17-inch apple studio display (mitsu diamondtron) hooked up to my dual g4, no high pitched sounds but the monitor occasionally omits a 'degauss-type' sound upon startup.

On apple monitors, its called the "pop zoom" phenomina. There can be a short on the flyback transformer on the main deflection board, caused by heat. It makes an elecric pop sound, the screen dimms a little, and it zooms in. Usually only after the warranty is up, it can become so rapid, that 1 folder icon can take up the entire screen before it dies. This is a big problem with the 17" studio displays.

Apple kept quiet on the issue, avoiding a recall. A week after I gave them hell - it was the second time this was happening - they put up a til article. If you have this problem, search google for "click pop zoom crt apple studio", and also apple's knowledge base, and take your monitor in for repairs. If it happens again, just once, call for repairs!!!

This insanity brought to you by:
The French CBC, driving antenna users mad since 1937.

Nah it's a 5 year old monitor.. but that sounds very common for apple to do btw.
