Hi,

Has anyone tried installing a PC Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 PCI SCSI card, in their Mac?

I was browsing the Adaptec Web site and the PC and Mac cards look identical and are of the same size. Therefore I'm guessing that they are the same cards but perhaps have a different ROM and software. As Adaptec cards *are* ROM upgradeable, perhaps it's possible to upgrade the ROM contents?

The reason I ask is that the Mac version of the same card is £100 more expensive than the PC version, in the UK. I'm not spending £250 if I can get the PC version working, which costs £150.

I tried for the hell of it to put a 39160 card into a blue and white that was a PC version and it didn't work. Different ROM.

This taken from Adaptec's FAQ:

Q: Can I use an Intel based AHA-2940W or AHA-2940UW PC card in my Apple Macintosh system?

A: No, you cannot. The Intel versions contain a smaller EPROM chip than the Macintosh versions of the boards. Therefore an Intel board will not work, and it cannot be flashed with a Mac driver or firmware. You will need a Power Domain 2940UW or 2940U2W. PowerDomain denotes the Macintosh control software that comes with the boards.

Although after posting that, I just realized that it says 2940 and 2940UW only. Doesn't say you can't use the 29160 and flash the ROM with the Mac version.
