I recently added a new firewire hard drive to my Mac Mini and am having some odd behavior. It initially was set up the following way

Firewire port -> 160gig -> 300 gig.

They were both recognized immediately. However, if I tried to copy from one drive to another it stalls almost immediately and crashes finder. After I bring it back I tried to copy a file from my hard drive (local) to the new drive (300gig) and that stalled out as well. I had to shut the drives all down and restart them in order to get them to work again.

Is this normal behavior for firewire drives to be unable to copy files to eachother and such? I don't recall having this problem when a friend stops by to grab a few files.

I am running the most current OS X with all of the updates. Please advise!

Hardware specs:
Compusa Brand 5.25" enclosure (metal stand with Blue leds) + 160gig WD 7200 rpm
Mad Dog Multimedia 3.5" enclosure + 300gig WD 7200 rpm
Mac Mini (first release) with 1 gig of RAM.

Is it possible one of those drives is formatted NTFS? An NTFS drive will show up but it's read-only. I don't know what problems it would cause. Try right-clicking on the drives and getting info to see if it shows the format.

And No, it isn't normal -- you should be able to copy anything from any drive to any drive.

Some chipsets (in my experience, the Prolific chipset) will have the problems you described when the devices are daisy-chained. You could try using a Firewire hub that has its own power supply but that may not help.

Do you get a degredation in performance by daisy-chaining firewire devices?

No. Bugs like the first post notwithstanding, it doesn't matter how they are connected, since FireWire is a shared bus.

Do you have problem copying from:
  • a FW drive to your harddisk?
  • a FW drive to a network share?

I've got a similar problem with a HP dvd640e. It worked flawlessly on a friend's iBook, but I can't get to copy from a DVD to my internal HD (no problems with CDs). There's no problems copying from a DVD to a network share neither..

The only info I found is this :
  1. Check if you have the latest firmware for your Mac and latest OS update
  2. Reset PRAM
  3. Go into the Open Firmware (Cmd+Opt+O+F at boot), and type : "reset-nvram<enter>reset-all", than reset PRAM
  4. Reinstall MacOS X

I want to find any other solution before I get to step 4... but it might be usefull to you

Are you refering to a simple data/home made DVD or a commercially pressed DVD. Commercial DVD's are encrypted (as you probably know) and you'll need a ripper to extract the data. It sounds like this is not the problem, but I just figured I'd state the obvious.
