Does anyone know how to *safely* take apart and then re-asemble an iPod? I've done searches, but my answers have all been as brief as 'just twist off the cover'. The menu button, the left track button, and the wheel have all stopped working for me, so any help will be apreciated.

haven't done it myself, but i would guess the safest method would be to use two suction cups to pull the iPod apart. suction cups should adhere well to the shiny smooth surfaces, and prevent any gouges from prying at the seam with metal objects. good luck.

I remember seeing a link to a Japanese article about this on Go2Mac. Perhaps you could search their site if they keep archives (now powerpage.org)

There is a discussion on removing the scrolling wheel for cleaning on the Apple forums, check it out. Removing the iPod wheel
Basically, someone claims you can pop of the wheel the same way you do the keys of the keyboard.

I strongly sugest not useing suction cups to pull the back cover off. for me the easiest way is to use your finger nail and gently pry the meatal from the plastic at the top corners, then following down the edge, repeat on the other side. There are about four plastic clips that are part of the white faceplate. The suction cup would bend the meatal or break the plastic before you get the back off. Do a search on these forums and you are bound to find something of this sort.
