Hi, I hope there are some people around here that are into midi because I need help with a decision. I currently use an old midi interface, the Fastlane. It's serial, so the only machine it works with is my powerbook 5300ce, which is painfully slow, even to run my very old software (finale 3.7). I would like to use my new powerbook G3 with my midi devices. My question is whether I should get a usb midi interface or a usb-serial adapter. I guess I would sell my old interface on ebay if i got a new one. but how much could i get for it? is it worth it? would my version of finale even work with a usb interface? thanks.

Firstly, your old Midi interface won't work with a USB-Serial adapter. But there is probably still not much point in selling it as it's just not worth anything!

Anyway, USB-Midi interfaces are relatively in-expensive now. They used to be a bit problematic in use. But with driver updates they seem to work very well now. I use a MidiMan MidiSport 2x2 (32ch) interface, and it works perfectly.

I would recommend (simply b/c i use it, love it and covet it) the Roland PC300 midi controller/interface. It's USB/midi compatiable, so when (if?) creative ever releases the soundblaster, i'll be able to go to serial midi. Anyhoo, long story short, it works pretty well with Finale (haven't tried it with anything else, is there anything else?) and I can't complain. I have to use OMS to get it to work (it's also compatible with FreeMIDI, if you're into that) which adds a bit of compatibility issues, but after a few upates, everything seems to be running smoothly, now when OS X comes in march......all bets are off, but that's the price paid for riding the bleeding edge.

A great place to go is
http://www.edirol.com

that's where i got my sustain pedal, they have some other great products, and they'll send you a decent catalog for free, can't go wrong with that, enjoy.

My interface won't work with any serial adapters? There's no software to fool my powebook into thinking that is has a serial port? Isn't that how the adapters work? Being a student I really don't have the $50 to shell out of another interface, if they are even that cheap. There's no other way? Thanks.

Thing is.. A USB to Serial Adapter is probably going to cost you about the same as a new USB Midi interface! Besides.. A USB to Serial adapter won't work for a Midi interface because it's a relatively well known fact that they absolutely destroy Midi timing. Hmm, So I lie a little.. It will work, But will work so badly that you will wish you didn't bother wasting your money on the USB-Serial adapter. Just beg borrow or steal the cash to get yourself a half decent USB Midi interface in the first place.
