I have an imac with FW, and want to connect it up in a dolby digital 5.1 setup. Do any companies plan to make a multichannel firewire audio interface that will allow 5.1 to be sent out of the DVD software via it?

Will home cinema amps ever support firewire as their audio input - and will there be the mac software to support it?

Why couldn't apple have put a S/P-DIF out of the imac, arrgghh!!!!!

I recently created a post in this very forum forum concerning FireWire Audio. See this link..

However, these are really aimed at Music studio use. And are rather costly and probably over specced for what you need.

And yes, It would have been nice if Jobs had seen fit to include SPDIF interfaces on Macs. But alas he assumes everyone wants to make Movies instead of Music.

PS, Sony are working on home HiFi technology which is almost entirely interconnected via FireWire. Even the speakers! Of course Sony refers to this technology as iLink rather than FireWire. But it's much the same thing. However, Sony doesn't offer much by way of Mac support. Instead they would rather you bought one of their iLink equiped PC's.
