I have a 400 mhz AGP G4 Sawtooth and am looking to get a CD-RW burner. Any suggestions? I'm looking to burn a lot of music CD's (concerts) so DAO recording that works is important. Firewire vs. SCSI? It sounds like the SCSI drives work better, but I'm not sure if I want to shell out the extra bucks for a PCI card. I would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks.

MacWorld this month does a review/comparison of Firewire CD-RWs HERE and loves the QPS drives. I'm looking to get something myself, both for burning audio CDs and as a backup device. My concern is that something like the Orb 2.2MB drive might be superior for backup. Maybe I'll get both!

After reading the slamming the Forum readers are giving the QPS CD-RW drive just 5 topics above this one I have decided to look elsewhere. I trust my fellow Forum users and their real-world experience/expertise. The Yamaha burners sound pretty good. No mention of any issues with drivers on the Yamaha. Driver issues give me the willies.

Yeah, the QPS sounds like it has some problems. Does anyone out there have a SCSI CD-RW? Or are there other Firewire CD-RW that don't have the DAO problems that the QPS has?

OrangeMicro's FireWire-SCSI converter works very well with the Yamaha external SCSI burner. Adds about $90 to the cost, but you can use a variety of legacy devices with it (and saves a PCI slot).

Whether you go for FireWire or SCSI or what... get a Yamaha.
They are without doubt the best... you can't argue with that. And if you do you won't win.
I have the 8424 SCSI external and it rocks... I believe they just released some 16*14*40 drive or something...
Whatever model it is, make it a Yamaha.

I just bought the QPS 8x4x32x and i have burned 4 audio CDs-- all of them work perfectly. Altogether it takes about 10 minutes for one whole 80 MIN. CD. This is Firewire. So i suggest this one - for $350 it is awesome.

I think I'll have the best configuration with a plextor 12x10x32 ide in a APS Pyro Firewire Case. According to www.xlr8yourmac.com, It works great. Unlike the QPS, no problem burning audio CDs! From ChaseShop.com, its 371 $ for the kit.

As of today (10/17/2000) I just got a new CDRW and have been "burning" all afternoon & night. If your looking for Affordability AND stability,, do what I did and go with SCSI. If you go to buy.com, they Have QPS SCSI models which INCLUDE A PCI SCSI CARD for $250.00 (approx.). the speeds are 4X/6x/24x and I tell you, it's the greatest CDRW drive I've ever used (to date I've used about 9, not including this one) and this has trukey been the best one I've ever used!!!!!!!!!!!! If you take the route I swear tyou won't regret it!

I recently purchased the Yamaha 8-8-24 firewire drive and have to report that it's truly great. I was expecting problems but everything works perfectly, no glitches except for one inconvenience: my powerbook freezes when I shut the drive down (not if I do it when the pb is in sleep mode). I'm sure that will be solve eventually. Anyway, the yamaha drive is recommended! Not very good looking but actually very functional as you can stack things on top of it or underneath.

I started seeing the QPS-disaticfaction threads only after I had purchased their 8432 Firewire back in April, but, really, I don't know that I have encountered any of the difficulties listed here; I am using the Toast (OEM) software, version 4.1.1 (?- or whatever the latest update is) and DAO seems to work fine for me. I am only bummed by the rapid appearance of the 121032, but this is to be expected...

October 5, 2000: Yamaha today introduced the CRW2100, the world's fastest CD-RW drive, with write speeds of 16x, re-write speeds of 10x, and read speeds of 40x. The drive also features an 8 MB memory buffer. An internal IDE configuration will ship next week, with an internal SCSI-3 version available later this month. External SCSI-3 and FireWire versions are
expected in November. [site not updated] http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/cHDR00007
