Hi
I just bought a gorgeous Apple Cinema Display 23" HD. The image quality is very good and everything works fine, but I found some white areas on the outer part of the screen, near the bottom for example, very close the apple logo. They are very visible when you have very dark background (for example Starry Night Pro). I examined the area very closely and it seems that the problem is due to a non perfect contact between the screen and the frame. The screen is then a bit deformed and gives a whitish color.
I haven't contacted assistance yet. Anyone else experiencing such a problem? I emphasize that it is, in my opinion, the problem is originated by a non uniform pressure on different areas of the screen
Merry Christmas, Ugo

Hey Merry Christmas.
I bought a 23" ACD last Friday and no white area on mine. I just had a strange problem with my firewire ports that refused to work at first. Now everything seems to be ok ...

Those white areas are backlight leakage. Typical of many LCD's but on the 23" it is quite visible.

My god, backlight leakage!
Do you think I am eligibile for support/substitution?

I just checked my 23" ACD using a black background and it doesn't have that problem. I'm not sure if it's covered or not, but it's worth asking.

Backlight leakage is not a defect however it's not pleasing to look at either while watching a DVD. I understand. I have the 23" Cinema Display as well. I exchanged the screen 3 times for other reasons but the backlight leakage was on all of them. Even you exchange it and open one up in the store the backlight leakage will not be apparent due to all the bright ambient light in the store. Don't worry about it but if you feel more comfortable take it back as long as you are within your return/exchange period.
If you are only within your warranty period Apple may not recognize this as an issue.

I will exchange it mtap (most times as possible). Unfortunately I bought it at the apple webstore, so I can't even check it with my eyes before exchanging.

That shouldn't be fair. I will let you know, however, I will contact them tomorrow.

I apologize, I didn't clarify that properly. Apple has to acknowledge issues with any device they make that is under warranty however under most cases they will try to cover up that this is really an issue by making excuses about LCD technology as in bad pixels.

Thank you. your thought was clear. In this case there is also a little detachment of the screen from the aluminium frame in correspondence of the white spot. If you pull gently the screen surface you can hear it. So I hope there are no excuses. As I told you, I will let you know.
Cheers, Ugo

Got a replacement, but I have the same problem. This time the leackage is in the upper part and is less visible. Shall I stay?

Are the 23" screens made by LG? I think it is LG that makes the 20" ones too. I have had 5 iMac 20"s and they all have issues one way or another with the screen. My friends have bought 20" Dell monitors with issues... Nasty... Why must apple use a company that has poor QC.

Ugo , what happened to your screen, did you give it back? I have got a similar problem.... when the screen is very dark, there are areas slightly brighter in the upper right corner... is that the same thing you had? I couldn't access your pics anymore.
I need to know what you did with this problem.
R.

My first Apple 20" Cinema Display had that too. Mostly along the bottom, also on the right side. It got worse with time, so after 6 months, it was VERY noticable. I went into to the apple store nearest me (but I bought it online) and they looked at it, acknowledged the problem, and sent it to be repaired. Within about 7-8 days I had it back. They just swapped out all my Cinema Display's internals, and kept my aluminum enclosure.
The replacement I've had for almost 6 months, with NO white spots. And I also purchased a second one about 4 months ago with no problems.
Seems like a hit or miss problem. That if you have it, will get worse, just at different rates. Some people seem to notice considerable deterioration, others more gradual. Good luck!

Hmmm. that is not very encouraging news. As it's really only visible when the screen's black and when there's no daylight, I'm hesitant to return it. On the other hand, it has no pixel problems whatsoever, so it's perfect in that respect.
