Startech - brand I wasn't familiar with until this last week, looks like they are finally providing a solution for Macs where we aren't paying exorbitant Mac tax for them building a driver to a PCI standard for macs like so many others out there that are still making a killing overcharging mac users...

Needed an upgrade to USB 2 (Got gf a ipod Nano for xmas, ticked off that even though connector cable end is the same, won't fit my ol' FW and stuck to syncing at USB 1 speeds on OEM/ built in)Plus would like to upgrade my storage internally...while the ATA-100 controller inside the machine is fine, the idea of speeding up disc access to SATA seemed good.

Solution: StarTech.com PCISAT2F3U4 - Storage / FireWire / USB2.0 controller - SATA-150 - 150 MBps - PCI

The Nerds are listing at $41.50!!! this seems less than Sonnet and other bigger names have been ripping off Mac users for relatively inexpensive PC FW cards repackaged for macs for years, and includeds SATA and 4 USB 2 cards....other USB 2 cards alone are almost as much!

Seems too good to be true.
Anyone w/ experience with Startech? did search and very few mentions of them in forum. Their website looks legit. Feedback would be appreciated.

On Startech's website, I only found the following:

Minimum Processor Requirements PC - Intel Pentium 2 at 400MHz or faster, Intel Celeron at 900MHz or faster, AMD Athlon of any speed

OS Support Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003 and up

I didn't see any mention of Mac support. While the USB2 and the Firewire ports may work fine, I highly doubt that the SATA will work without firmware written specifically for use on Macs.

thanks chef. think it's a misprint took another look at their website and you are correct...but looked back where I saw it first (macmall) and it was listed as "universal"...downloaded the manual, and it lists ...TaDa: MacG3 or higher (not upgraded)...so it looks like I'm (or we're) in luck...

they look legit. I've got a few things too work out personally about continuing to try for a grad degree vs returning to work and having a budget for a new computer again in the next 2 weeks so may put this off just a bit...

hopefully someone will have some experience with this specifically, or at least them to report...
Bueller? Bueller?
