hi,

I have a 30gb ipodVideo connected to an xp machine through a USB port in the back. When the ipod is plugged in the new harware wizard comes up - found new device apple ipod etc - then get message that hardware cannot be installed - no driver. It searches the CD and internet and no luck. All the ipod software is installed. The asme happens with my Olympus mini camera. Its just a plug in and play camera. i plug it in, new hardware wizard comes up etc... Cant find the drivers or anything so will not work. its also happened with an external memory card driver....These are all fairly recent devices. The mouse, and Disgo USB memory stick and things work but ive had them for a while. But the new things im getting wont work. Whats going on? The devices work on other computers but not mine. Its like somethings missing or i cant find what its looking for. Im not sure, hopefully someone here will!

Thanks for your time,

Dave

I have the same problem with an Ipod nano using XP with SP2 & updates. But ebverything worked ok when I installed the software on a laptop using W2000.

Did you manage to resolve this problem? I have searched the web extensively and found several tips but none of them worked

Ye i manged to fix it. The problem was the install wizard was looking in the wrong folder.

plug the ipod in n the wizard should open; (by the way im doing all of this by memory but it should be fairly accurate)

1. Click install advanced

2. Then click dont search (the 3rd option)

3. Then click have disk

4. Then eventually you'll come to a point where you can type in a folder root, type Cwindows\inf

5. It should then find something in there

let me know if it works,

dave

David and magil57, WELCOME to the MacNN forums!

The real problem you both ran into with the iPod is that you didn't install the iPod driver software before you plugged in the iPod. When they say "install this first," they really mean it. Even if you already have iTunes installed, you MUST have the iPod driver installed before connecting the iPod or you'll have problems.

The camera issue was obviously solved by showing the computer where to look for the driver, but I have to wonder if Olympus provided a driver disc that should have been installed first as well. It's either that or the XP installations you both have had problems with where to look for drivers in general. Fortunately, once you've pointed XP to a particular folder to look for drivers, it is usually smart enough to look thorugh that folder tree the next time it looks for any driver. That should keep this from happening again.

The multiple beep thing comes from Windows' USB connect/disconnect sensing. Sometimes it thinks you've disconnected and reconnected almost instantaneously, thus the "down" sound followed by an "up" sound and a "down" sound. This is caused by transient signals that can occur because not all four pins of the cable disconnect at the same instant. It's normal-don't worry about it.
