Hey--
I also just think that I only have 3 choices for monitors.... almost forgetting that you can hook up the G4 to other monitors...
if i had my choice, i'd take the cinema display.... but for half of that or less couldn't I get two nice 17 in monitros that will do the job?
• any suggestions on good monitors from 15 inch and up? ones not to use?
• any flat monitors that are jsut as good as apples (sony?_
• how does the G4 hook up with other monitros....do you need special cables or buy a video card?
thanks.

With the same money for the 17 inch LCD you can get a really nice 19 to 20 inch CRT. I don't have any recomandations but Sony is always a nice choice. For hook ups all Recent G4 video cards have VGA and ADC, the only thing you are limited on is DVI unless you want to buy a 100 buck converter.

Speaking from experience, I agree with the above post. As far as CRT's go sony makes the best one out there. I have a 21" FD Trinitron on my desk now, it's VERY sharp and bright. LCD's are great when space is at a premium, but apple's display's are still too expensive. You can get a 15" LCD for about 250-300 now, and apple is still charging 600.00
Take Care.

Samsung SyncMaster flat panel 17".
Was skeptical initially, but now, I prefer it to my CRTs (although my Studio Display is very nice as well). Plus, they have multiple input options (I use picture-in-picture a lot to view cable TV/cameras while I work). The Samsung even has a remote control
Everything I needed to connect to my 867 was provided. No extra expense involved.

If you're willing to go with crt the Lacie ElectronBlue 19" is veeery nice. Besides excellent picture quality you get it with a hood and a nice dark blue colour. Kick-ass!!!

Or you can go with the 22". The best monitor I have worked with. And you can fit more pixels than a Cinema Display, while keeping things at a good size to read. All you miss is the nice 16:10 ratio of the Cinema Display.

Either the LaCie 19" Electron blue, or the Sony 19" CDP-G420S would be a good choice. I got a G420S a month ago, and I think it's a great monitor. The color clarity is excellent.

Very cool thanks.
Okay, most monitors shoudl hook up fine via the VGA port. But how do dual monitors work?
You just buy another video card and change a setting.
And would two 17 inch monitors be more productive than a single 19, 21 incher
this is fun to tak about as I write on my i Mac

First:
If you're going LCD's steer away from sony, though their reputation is great, and I'd swear by a sony CRT, the low/mid end LCD's are quite blurry.
Samsung LCD's have probably the best quality. Apple ranks at the top. A cinema display is like 2 17"ers, since it's quite wide.
The advantage to a BIG screen compared to two smaller ones is you have one big menu, plenty of room, etc. The reason i don't use two screens (cinema + 19") is because the damned border, and of course, it hurts your eyes like hell when you switch from a bright stationary LCD to a shitty CRT (sorry for the language)
Anyhoo, it's all up to your personal preference, I prefer LCD's just because I do

In the vein of that last comment (about LCDs) I'll just offer this: After using my Apple 17" LCD I find it difficult to use ANY CRT. Other LCDs (such as on my HP notebook) are tolerable. But Apple has spoiled me with this perfect display that they have created.

I am using an Envision 19" from Staples. Looks good, the price at the time was right $209.00 less $50.00 rebate. I had a bit of trouble with the rebate as they gave me a 17" monitor $70.00 rebate and their rebate center kept throwing it back at me. Finally the store manager credited my card for $70.00 and I figured we were ever. Staples did not, the sent me two checks for $70 and $50 respectively. So I could have had the monitor for $19.00. I was honest and returned the two checks to the manager who had issued the credit. He was amazed.
By the way I am using this monitor on a Beige G3/400 with 6mb of video ram. According to the Apple spec sheet I should get millions of colors at 1280x1024 but in fact can only get to 1152x870. Over that things get a little unstable especially if ixTV is running. Funny but 10.1 can handle 1600x1200 (16bit) far better than 9.2 can.

I've got a KDS Avitron (FD Trinitron tube) 19-incher. If I run it at 1600x1200 at 75 Hz w/ my Radeon PCI, it dies horribly (lost 2 monitors that way, got 'em replaced, cuz they were under warranty). Anyways, I now run at 1280x960 and it's been going this way for a couple of weeks, so I guess running at the highest supported settings on a KDS isn't such a good idea.

I have one more suggestion:
If you plan on buying the DP1000 the 15" is $99

Sorry to rain on your parade, but that is incorrect. That was correct under the previous promo, which ended in late January. The current promo, which ends March 31, gets you $100 for the 15" LCD, $300 for the 17", and $500 for the 22" Cinema Display. This promo pricing is predicated on the monitor size; the previous one was predicated on the computer model. Therefore, no matter which G4 you buy, if you pick the 15" LCD, you only get $100 back.

All these posts are great... i'm going to print them out to keep for reference... but I don't think anyone has answer my second question....
How does one go about hooking up 2 monitors to there apple computers?
Do you have to buy an extra card to hook up another monitor?
How do you tell your computer that you have 2 montiors and you want them not to mirror each other, but give you more work space.
thanks. keep up the good work!

If you have one of the new G4s, introduced in late January, you can hook up one Apple ADC flat panel and one standard VGA monitor on the same card; they have the twin view feature built in. If you have a previous generation G4, you have to put in another video card, unless you have the Dual 800Mhz machine, which has a twin view card in it.

Since Karl answered the other questions, I'll answer this one.
Once you've installed the hardware - monitors, extra video card if necessary, drivers for the video card if they don't already exist in the system - the MacOS will actually detect you are using 2 monitors. To set them up to the right resolution, physical placement (indicates to the OS where the second monitor is in relation to the primary monitor), whether you want to mirror or extend the desktop, you go into the Displays control panel. I think once you go into the displays control panel it will explain itself. You can even change which monitor is the primary monitor by moving the menu bar to it.

I just bought an LG 995Plus 19" Flatron CRT. It's bright, crisp, and has a built-in 4-port USB hub. It cost me $500 CDN (approx $320 US).
The nice bit about the hub is that I can connect the keyboard to the monitor which frees up that USB extension that Apple provides. The USB extension now connects to my iBook to make Apple's mouse usable since the iBook's USB port is on the wrong side. Before that I had a big bulky USB extension. Apple's is much nicer for this purpose.

thanks for the help.
So the new G4 can hook up one falt and one standard VGA. But does the card for flat monitors only work with apple flat monitors or I assume any one.
And if I wanted to hook up 2 vga montiors, all I need is another card? Which is cheap right?
Thanks again for all your help.

The connector on the G4 for flat panels is an ADC connection. If you want to hook up a standard VGA monitor and a VGA flat panel, you'll have to buy a second video card.

I also have 2 VGA monitors and am looking for the best way to run them on my new DP PowerMac. Has anyone here used the Gefen ADC -> VGA adaptor? If that works well, it seems like the best way to go, but I haven't seen any feedback on it.
If I have to add a second video card, will it be problematic to add a non-NVIDIA PCI card to function alongside my GeForce4? (In both OS X and Classic 9.2.2.) I tried to to find a list of supported video cards on the Apple web site, but no luck.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's frustrating not being able to use 2 VGAs out of the box.
Best,
Erik

The Gefen adaptor is only for using an ADC monitor on a VGA port. If you want to run two VGA monitors, you'll have to put another video card in. ATI is bringing out the Radeon 7000 PCI card, which should work, although I haven't seen anything official about compatibility either. It's supposed to be available in early March, for about $150.

They also have a cable that runs a VGA monitor from the ADC port.
<http://www.gefen.com/products/extendit/cables_accessories/adaptors/adc%20to%20vga/index.html>
They're now claiming it works on the twinview Nvidia cards, and it's only $49, so I'll give it a try.
