I am using the $30 Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse (3-button)

I was playing with the Gimp (Photoshop for Linux) the other day and as I was sketching a curve with the mouse cursor, it jumped like 30 pixels in direction opposite to the direction of the cursor. So, it screwed up my line and I had to erase that part of the line.

As the optical mouse it is, it has been great for artwork. There is no ball that can get stuck, and I use the right and middle button constantly to change tools. And this "jump effect" is seen once per session, only when the mouse is placed on the shiny wood of my desktop. Other than Gimp (Photoshop) use, this Logitech mouse has served me with well all the time.

Reliability: is that the advantage of the Apple Pro Optical Mouse? Is that 100% photoshop reliability worth paying double the price? Where does the "Pro" in-fix come from?

My Apple "Pro" mouse jumps occasionally. I think it depends on the surface you are on. It behaves most of the time, just once every few days it jumps. I use it on a black desk that has very tiny grains in it.

I bought the Kensington Optical Pro mouse for 31 bucks at Buy.com and it just rocks. It's got 5 buttons (counting the button under the) scroll wheel and works flawlessly in Mac OS X. Not to mention it looks perfect next to my iMac DV SE.

Don't understand why they work differently because Logitech makes Apple's mouse (as well as the hockey puck).

It is probably because Apple special-ordered the design to Logitech. They had to be a-la-Steve: lickable and expensive.

My Apple optical mouse jumped from day one. It turned out to be the Volvo mouse pad. It jumps more than five inches to the upper left when it glides over one spot of the pad. I moved the mouse pad away and the problem went away.

I am glad that my Volvo does not jump like that.

I use Windows NT computers at school.

I LOVE the scroll wheel.

That's my biggest complaint. Ever time I reach for the middle of my hockey puck and then groan and mouse over to the scroll bar, I feel I'm wasting time.......

I am using an Apple pro optical mouse. Excellent control and doesn't jump at all. Works great in Photoshop 5.5 with MP support.

Usually jumping has to do with the surface the mouse is on, not the mouse itself.
