Does anyone have any recommendations for a small compact external burner to be used for portable and desktop apps. Peferrably something that works well with both Mac and PC. Thanx.....joe

A friend of mine (PC and Mac user) picked up a Yamaha CD-RW (4x4x16) and recommended it. I connected mine (purchased at APS Tech, but it is actually a Yamaha drive) to a B&W G3 via SCSI and I've had no problems at all. It isn't the smallest external device and isn't very portable. Nevertheless, it has been reliable and is easy to use.

Are you looking for SCSI drive? Or maybe USB or FireWire?

Preferably Firewire or SCSI. The burn speed of USB is unacceptably slow on both my PC notebook and iMacDV SE. And since it has to fit in my PC notebook case, it would be helpful if it were small.....joe

I personally like the look of the new iomega predator. Its very nice looking and very compact -perfect for notebook users like my.

ON the downside its usb, and only supports 4x4x6 on usb1.1.

It supports 8x4x32 for usb2.0, although I dont really know a lot about usb 2, when it will be released, and if its just drivers or if its the actually hardware that you need to support it. (eg will my ibook indigo support usb2.0)?

At their website, iomega claim they are going to release a firewire model of this driver and/or a firewire adaptor for the existing predator, which would ensure 8x4x32 on it.

$539 AUS or $249 US make it one of the best value and nicest looking drives on the market in my opinion.
MacBook Alu, 13", 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 256MB video
G5 Imac, 17", 1.9Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, 128MB video, built in isight, airport and bluetooth
Indigo iBook, 366mhz; 320MB RAM; CD; FW; Airport

I just got the Sony Spressa CD-RW as a gift. Its an external Firewire as you want it and pretty fast at 12x8x32. I have no complains, although I've only had it for a week now.

Forgot to mention that it works with PC's as well (as long they're Firewire-ready-I guess this is a given...).
