Current Printer: Epson Photo 700.
Problem: It has decided it doesn't want to print black any longer. Replacing the cartridge and cleaning the heads does nothing.
But that's not the question. The question is what color printer would you recommend for someone who will only print out photographs and artwork? I don't need it to do text well as my roommate already has an HP laserjet for such things.
So, should I get another inkjet? I'm getting pretty close to sick of this technology at this point.
Should I go dye-sub? Is there any USB dye-sub printer with mac software on the market?
Color laser is too pricey, so that's out.
As long as the printer can do 8x11 (normal paper) or very close to it (no 6x4 printers), I'll be happy.

In defense of inkjets, I have an Epson 900G and it's awesome.
But, if you're looking for alternatives, go over to www.alps.com and look at their dye sub/thermal transfer printers. They are just awesome, offer photo quality (2400dpi) and add the capability of printing with foils and spot colors. It's more expensive than inkjets at the onset, but cheaper in the long run. Again, the results are just phenominal, especially when compared to inkjets.
Good luck.

As an owner of an Epson 750 Stylus Photo over a year ago I am familiar with the quality of the output. I replaced my 750 with a 1270 because I wanted a wider format and better quality prints.
Most (70%) of my printing is photographs and graphics. The quality of the Epson 1270 Stylus Photo is unbeatable. With the new papers and ink formulations available the output quality is hard to beat. If you are interested in archive properties, the Epson 2000P would be the printer to look at. It is much more expensive however.
I suggest you look at an 870 (small format version, same as 750) or a 1270 and test print a comparison image at various sizes to see the difference for yourself. You will get better looking photos (just like commercial film prints) with the 1270 as compared to a color laser printer (this is also stated in various reviews of photo printers. In addition, the text quality of the 1270 is also outstanding which is not so true with the 2000P according to user reports and reviews.
Hope this was some help,
Frank
