I need some major help. My UMAX 2100U scanner just crapped out on me now when I try to scan anything all I hear is this grinding noise. I have tried taking it apart and seeing if something was jammed but nothing is. I really need some help. This is less than a year old. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I have UMAX Astra 2100U and G4/400 (AGP), and MacOS 9.0.4. I had to update drivers (MacOS 9 crashed during startup when I had older VistaScan 3.52 driver installed). Now I have VistaScan 3.7.3 and everything works ok.

If you hear a grinding noise, most likly the motor has died or stripped a gear. Given the low price of new scanners today, it may be best to buy a new one instead of repairing this one.

In my opinion, Umax scanners are junk. I have had 2 Umax scanners, and both had that grinding noise when scanning. Also, both scanners had a fog that covered the inside of the glass. Their software is as buggy as a swamp in the Everglades. Check out the Epson scanners. I just swithched from a Umax to the Epson, and there is no comparision.
